Box Score 2 April 16, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw improved to 26-11 with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Washington (Mo.) by scores of 3-0 and 8-2. The Bears dropped to 27-6 after coming into the day on an 11-game win streak and with victories in 23 of their last 24 contests.
Mark Alson and John Tschantz combined to pitch the two-hit shutout for the Tigers in the first game with Alson going four innings in improving to 6-2. Tschantz picked up his third save by pitching three innings of scoreless relief. Jason Ortwerth dropped to 4-1 with the loss.
The Tigers scored one in the third when Kyle Dobbs walked, moved to third on John Younger's single and later scored when Greg DeBeer drew a bases loaded walk.
In the fourth, Zach Harris led off with a single and moved to third on Adrian Norris' double. Harris scored on Jon Gratz's groundout to second and Norris scored on Dobbs' sacrifice fly to left.
Bryan Brown and Andy Shields each had one hit for the Bears, while Younger, Chris Newman, Harris and Norris each had one for the Tigers.
In the nightcap, the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on Sipe's RBI single and a Bears' fielding error. Washington tied the score in the second on Alan Germano's two-run double that scored Dan Rieck and Shields.
In the fourth, Norris reached on an infield single and moved to second on Kevin McAteer's walk. Dobbs singled and moved to second on an error by the Bears' outfielder which allowed Norris to score. Newman grounded out to score McAteer and Dobbs scored on a Washington infield error.
DePauw put the game away in the sixth as Sipe doubled in Younger, DeBeer singled to score Younger and Harris triple scoring DeBeer.
The Tigers pounded out 14 hits with Matt Deahl collecting three and Younger, Sipe and Dobbs each adding a pair. The Bears finished with six hits as Rieck had a pair. P.J. Mitchell improved to 6-2 with the win, while Brent Buffa dropped to 8-1 with the loss. Bill Metzinger picked up his first save.
DePauw opens Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament play on Thursday as the number one seed from the Eastern Division. The Tigers face Millsaps College at 10 a.m. at Hendrix College. That broadcast can be heard live on WGRE.
