DePauw comes from behind to win first game; fails to hold lead in nightcap

gratz030605.jpg March 6, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw won the first game of its doubleheader with visiting Blackburn by coming from behind, but dropped the nightcap by not protecting a lead as it split the twinbill with identical 7-6 scores. With the split, DePauw is now 6-3, while Blackburn is 1-5.

Trailing 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh of the opener, the Tigers scored twice to take the win. John Younger led off the inning with  a single and advanced to second on Chris Newman's sacrifice bunt. Ryan Sipe moved him to third with a single before Greg DeBeer singled through the left side to score Younger and knot the score. Adrian Norris then singled down the left field line to bring home Sipe with the game-winning run.

DePauw fell behind 3-0 in the first as an error on a failed pickoff attempt allowed one run to score before Dan Pearce doubled to score one and Dustin Hopkins singled to make it 3-0. The Tigers tied it in the second when Jon Gratz singled to score Norris and Gary Ehlebracht's fielder's choice plated Zach Harris. Kyle Dobbs then singled, scoring Elhebracht.

The Beavers regained the lead in the sixth as Hopkins delivered a two-run double and Mike Current brought home Hopkins with a squeeze bunt. DePauw closed the gap to 6-5 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Matt Kleine and  a fielder's choice by Dobbs.

Gratz finished with three hits with Younger, Sipe, Norris and Harris each adding a pair of DePauw's 15. Hopkins led the Beavers with two hits and three RBI. Brian Scott picked up the win in relief of Kerry Frost with two innings of hitless action. Kyle Rensing suffered the loss.

In the nightcap, the Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Newman tripled home Younger and DeBeer's double play grounder scored Newman. Blackburn took a 3-2 lead in the second Nick Gruver's two-run single and Jamie Puckett's run-scoring single.

The Tigers added two in the bottom of the second when Harris scored on a wild pitch and Kleine scored on Younger's grounder. They scored two more in the fifth as Kleine drove in a pair with a single to center.

DePauw took that 6-3 lead into the seventh. Puckett led off with a triple to left center before Eric Mattingley replaced starter Paul Rodenhouse on the mound. Mark Tambow's sacrifice fly scored Puckett before Carl Heuer singled and Pearce followed with a double before Hopkins reached on an infield hit that scored Heuer. Rensing then knotted the score and forced extra innings with a single to left.

The Tigers had several chances in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings as the leadoff hitter reached base each time. DePauw had the bases loaded with no outs in the eighth and runners on second and third with no outs in the ninth but couldn't score.

Heuer led off the Blackburn 11th with a homer to left to give the Beavers the eventual game-winning run.

Each team finished with 13 hits with Deahl leading the Tigers with three and DeBeer, Harris and Kleine finishing with two each. Heuer and Hopkins each had three for Blackburn with Puckett and Gruver adding two apiece.

Pearce picked up the in in relief by pitching scoreless ball over 5 2/3 innings. Scott suffered the loss despite allowing just two hits with four strikeouts and no walks in 4 2/3 innings.

DePauw hosts Hanover on Saturday at noon in a single, nine-inning game.
