Box Score March 22, 2005, Port Charlotte, Fla. - The DePauw baseball team pounded out 14 hits and improved to 12-7 with a 13-6 wn over the University of Chicago at the Port Charlotte Invitational.
Starter Mark Alson pitched five innings and allowed just four hits in improving to 3-1 on the season. The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on Matt Deahl's RBI single which scored Chris Newman. They pushed the lead to 3-0 in the third on Ryan Sipe's double which scored John Younger and Greg DeBeer's single which scored Sipe.
Chicago closed the gap to 3-1 in the fourth on Mike Costello's single through the right side which scored Steve Ruh. DePauw scored two more in the fourth as Gary Ehlebracht singled homeKevin McAteer and Younger's sacrifice fly scored Zach Harris.
T.J. Rajcevich's single in the fifth scored Mike Serio and cut the DePauw lead to 5-2, but the Tigers scored two more in the bottom of the fifth as Younger's single through the left side brought home McAteer and Adrian Norris.
The Maroons scored four in the sixth as their first four batters reached base and scored. The Tigers put the game away in the seventh with a six-run rally.
Sipe led the Tigers with three hits, while Younger, Deahl and McAteer had two apiece. Younger drove in four for the Tigers. Ruh had two of Chicago's seven hits.
The Tigers face St. John's (Minn.) on Wednesday.
