Box Score March 20, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - Oglethorpe's Tim Ernst doubled to left center in the top of the ninth to score Scott Casey with the eventual winning run as the Stormy Petrels defeated the Tigers 8-7 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game.
DePauw, which had its five-game win streak snapped, dropped to 11-6 overall and 3-1 in the SCAC, while Oglethorpe improved to 2-19 overall and 1-11 in the conference.
Oglethorpe jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first as Evan Baker's sacrifice fly plated Ernst and Brad Sims singled home Austin Bennett.
John Younger led off the DePauw first with a double and later scored on Ryan Sipe's groundout. The Tigers took the lead in the second when Adrian Norris scored from third on a wild pitch and Kevin McAteer also scored on the play when the throw to retire Norris was errant.
The Stormy Petrels regained the lead in the third on run-scoring singles by Sims, Casey and Anthony Sabala. DePauw tied the score at 5-5 in the bottom of the third when Sipe doubled home Chris Newman who led off the inning with a bunt single. Sipe scored on Matt Deahl's single.
In the fifth, DePauw took a 6-5 lead on Deahl's RBI single that scored Sipe. Oglethorpe knotted the score at 6-6 in the seventh on Sabala's single that scoreed Sims. The Tigers took a 7-6 lead in the the bottom of the seventh on Zach Harris' single to left that scored Norris.
Oglethorpe again rallied as Sims delivered a two-out single through the right side in the eighth that scored Bennett. In the ninth, Casey led off with a walk, stole second and later moved to third on a passed ball before Ernst brought him home with the double.
Oglethorpe pounded out 15 hits with Bennett and Sims each collecting four. Ernst added three, while Sabala had a pair. Sims drove in three runs and Bennett scored three. The Tigers finished with 12 hits as Newman, Sipe and Deahl each had two.
Ernst picked up the win in relief to improve to 1-1, while Paul Rodenhouse suffered the defeat after 2 1/3 innings of relief.
