Tigers sweep Oglethorpe; extend win streak to five

March 19, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw extended its win streak to five straight after it swept a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader from visiting Oglethorpe by scores of 9-5 and 8-1. The Tigers improved to 11-5 overall and 3-0 in the SCAC, while the Stormy Petrels dropped to 1-19 overall and 0-11 in the conference.

The Tigers jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first on Greg DeBeer's two-run single and a run-scoring fielder's choice from Kevin McAteer. Oglethorpe scored two in the top of the second when Scott Casey and Calen Henrichs each drove in runs with fielder's choices.

DePauw pushed the lead to 8-2 with five in the bottom of the second as John Younger scored from third on a balk before DeBeer drove in Chris Newman with an infield single. Matt Deahl drove in Ryan Sipe with a base hit before McAteer drove in a pair with a single up the middle. Newman's triple down the right field line in the fifth scored Dobbs to make it 9-2.

The Stormy Petrels added two in the sixth on a two-run double by Evan Baker and then one in the seventh on Tim Ernst's solor homer to right.

DeBeer and Newman each had two of DePauw's 10 hits, while DeBeer and McAteer each drove in three runs. Oglethorpe totaled eight hits with Ernst, Austin Bennett and Baker each finising with two.

Mark Alson pitched six innings with five strikeouts and no walks and improved to 2-1, while Bennett dropped to 0-5 with the loss.

In the nightcap, the teams battled through three scoreless innings before Oglethorpe pitcher Brad Sims helped his own cause with a solo homer to right center. The Tigers knotted the score in the bottom of the fourth when Adrian Norris led off the inning with a double and later scored on Zach Harris' single to center. DePauw took the lead in the fifth when Deahl doubled home Newman.

The Tigers blew the game open in the sixth with six runs. Newman, Sipe and Deahl each drove in a pair with singles.

DePauw's John Tschantz picked up his first collegiate win in his first start by scattering just three hits, all in the fourth inning. He retired the final 10 batters he faced in improving to 1-0. Sims suffered the loss and dropped to 0-6.

Newman, Sipe, Deahl and Harris each finished with two hits, while Deahl drove in three to lead the Tigers.

The two teams wrap up their four-game series on Sunday in a single, nine-inning game that starts at 11 a.m.
