Box Score March 18, 2005, Greencastle, Ind. - The Tigers pounded out 13 hits and scored in five of the eight innings on the way to a 12-2 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over visting Oglethorpe. DePauw improved to 9-5 overall and 1-0 in the SCAC with its third straight win, while the Stormy Petrels dropped to 1-17 overall and 0-9 in the conference.
The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Ryan Sipe and a run-scoring groundout by Greg DeBeer.
In the second, the Tigers scored six as John Younger drew a bases-loaded walk before Chris Newman drove in two with a single. DeBeer brought home Younger with the fourth run of the frame on a sacrifice fly. Matt Deahl's groundout scored Newman and Adrian Norris capped off the inning with a single that scored Sipe.
The Stormy Petrels scored twice in the fourth when Tim Ernst led off with a triple and scored on Austin Bennett's single. Scott Casey later drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 8-2.
In the fourth the Tigers had runners on second and third before Kevin McAteer reached on an Oglethorpe error that scored Deahl from third. Zach Harris' sacrifice fly scored Norris to push the lead to 10-2. Newman drove in Kyle Dobbs with a groundout in the seventh before Harris ended the game in the eighth with a single down the left field line.
P.J. Mitchell improved to 2-2 by scattering four hits over six innings, while Eric Mattingly and John Kihlken each pitched an inning of scoreless relief. Nick Greenfield dropped to 1-4 on the season after going the distance for Oglehtorpe.
Harris and Norris each had three hits for the Tigers with Newman adding two along with a game-high three RBI.
The teams square off in a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
