Box Score 2 Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw improved to 25-12 on the season with a doubleheader sweep of visiting Wabash by scores of 16-6 and 11-0. The Little Giants dropped to 12-22 on the season. The three-game sweep over Wabash lifted DePauw head coach and Crawfordsville native Matt Walker's record against the Little Giants to 11-0.
The Tigers scored eight times in the bottom of the second of the first game and never trailed. Zach Harris, Hunter Slade and Kevin McAteer each drew consecutive one-out walks to load the bases before Kyle Dobbs drove in a pair with a two-out single. John Younger then reached on a throwing error that scored McAteer. Matt Deahl followed with an RBI single which scored Dobbs. After Ryan Sipe walked, Kevin Ehinger blasted a grand slam to left center to make it 8-0.
Wabash battled back in the third with six runs as Nick Pompeo led off with an infield single and Scott Hamilton reached on a one-out walk. Following a fielder's choice, Pompeo scored on a wild pitch and Phil Ramos walked. Bill Goff doubled in two runs and Chris Sides added a run-scoring single. Mike Mack then ripped a two-run homer to left center to make it 8-6.
Dobbs drove in a run in the third on a fielder's choice to extend the lead to 9-6 before the Tigers added three more in the fourth. Sipe and Ehinger led off the fourth with singles and came home on Harris' single. Slade drove in Ehinger with a sacrifice fly and Dobbs plated Harris with a single to left.
DePauw closed out the scoring in the sixth as Jon Gratz led off by being hit by a pitch. Mark Peterson pinch-ran for Gratz before Dobbs doubled. Chris Newman doubled home a pair of runs and came home on Sipe's triple.
Sipe and Dobbs each finished with three of DePauw's 11 hits and Sipe became the Tigers' career total base leader with a fifth-inning single. Ehinger added two hits and four RBI in the contest. Scott Hamilton, Goff and Sides each had two of Wabash's 10 hits.
Tyson Becker notched his fourth win against three losses and struck out seven to raise his career strikeout total to 207 to tie the mark set by Daniel Mack in 2002. Goff suffered the loss and dropped to 3-4.
In the nightcap, Mark Alson tossed a six-hitter for his third shutout of the season and the Tigers pounded out 17 hits to take the 11-0 win. Ehinger's sacrifice fly in the first scored Newman and was his 55th RBI of the season which broke the DePauw single-season mark of 54 set by Mike Ottsen in 1986.
Mike Gonzalez doubled with one out in the third and Dobbs drove him in with a double to right. Deahl singled to score Dobbs before Sipe was hit by a pitch. Ehinger singled in Deahl and Harris drove in Sipe with a base hit. The run was the 44th scored by Sipe to break the Tigers' single-season record of 43 set by Ted Rutan in 1982. Greg DeBeer's single scored scored Ehinger and McAteer's base hit drove in Harris to push the DePauw lead to 7-0.
Dobbs scored on a bases loaded wild pitch in the third after reaching on a single and Ehinger lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Newman. Sipe's sacrifice fly in the fourth scored Gonzalez and the Tigers added their final run in the sixth when Dobbs reached on his fourth hit of the game and seventh of the twinbill and later scored on an error.
In addition to Dobbs, Deahl also had four hits while Ehinger, DeBeer and Gonzalez each had a pair. Six different Little Giants had one hit apiece.
Alson improved to 4-1 with the victory, while Jon Horne dropped to 2-6 with the loss.
DePauw travels to St. Louis on Sunday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Washington (Mo.) University.
