DePauw tops Engineers in extra innings

Box Score

Greencastle, Ind. - Zach Harris' single through the left side scored Ryan Sipe with the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th as DePauw defeated Rose-Hulman 7-6 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference contest. DePauw improved to 22-12 overall and 13-3 in the SCAC, while 23rd-ranked Rose-Hulman dropped to 25-4 overall and 11-1 in the conference.

John Younger led off the 10th with an infield single, but was forced out at second on Matt Deahl's attempted sacrifice bunt. After Sipe grounded out to first to move Deahl to second, Deahl advanced to third on a passed ball on the first pitch of an intentional walk to Kevin Ehinger. After Ehinger reached, Harris hit the first pitch between third and short to bring home Deahl with the winning run.

DePauw got on the board first with two runs in the fourth as Ehinger was hit by a pitch and went to third after Harris' single and a throwing error on the play. Kevin McAteer then singled to center with one out to make it 2-0.

Rose-Hulman took the lead in the sixth as Shawn Smith reached after being hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Scott Tourville walked.  Matt Moore's single scored Smith and John Kihlken replaced DePauw starter Bill Metzinger on the mound. Brad Jones advanced the runners to second and third with a successful sacrifice bunt. Jimmy Goebel then singled to center and advanced to second on the throw as Tourville scored. With two outs,  Adam Windmiller singled in Goebel and Moore to make it 4-2.

The Tigers loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth after Harris drew a leadoff walk, McAteer was hit by a pitch and Mike Gonzalez singled through the right side. Kyle Dobbs followed with a fielder's choice grounder that scored Harris. McAteer came home when Younger reached on an error to tie the game at 4-4.

Tourville led off the Rose-Hulman seventh with a double before Moore was hit by a pitch. Jones singled to center to score Tourville, but was thrown out attempting to advance to second after Younger bobbled the ball in centerfield allowing Moore to make it to third. Goebel's squeeze bunt scored Moore and lifted the Engineers' lead to 6-4.

Sipe led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and Ehinger followed with a walk. Todd Clementoni replaced Scott Otto on the mound for Rose-Hulman and Harris came through with a base hit that scored Sipe. Jones then came in to pitch and, after Greg DeBeer's bunt moved the runners to second and third, McAteer singled to left scoring Ehinger and tying the contest at 4-4.

In the Rose-Hulman ninth the Engineers had runners on second and third after Jones' successful sacrifice bunt. DePauw elected to intentionally walk Goebel and the move worked as Drew DeMarco hit into the team's fourth double play of the day. In the top of the 10th, the Engineers had runners on first and second with one out, but DePauw reliever Brian Scott who came in for Kerry Frost retired the final two batters.

Harris and Sipe each had three hits for the Tigers, while McAteer and Gonzalez each had two amongst DePauw's 13. Cort Severns, Moore, Jones, Windmiller and Adam Furry each had two of Rose-Hulman's 13 hits. Scott picked up his first collegiate victory in as many decisions, while Jones slipped to 2-2 on the season.

The Tigers have clinched at least the number-two seed in the SCAC Eastern Division and still has a chance at the top seed if Rose-Hulman loses three of four to Oglethorpe next weekend.

DePauw returns to action on Friday, April 16, when it travels to Crawfordsville for a single game at 3 p.m. against Wabash. The Tigers return home on Saturday, April 17, when they host Wabash in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
