DePauw completes series sweep of Stormy Petrels

Atlanta, Ga. - The Tigers pounded out a season-high 20 hits and held on for a 16-13 win at Oglethorpe in the series finale to improve to 15-9 overall and 8-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Oglethorpe dropped to 5-23 overall and 4-4 in the SCAC.

 

Kevin Ehinger and Greg DeBeer paced the DePauw offensive attack as each had four hits. Mike Gonzalez and Matt Deahl each collected three while Ryan Sipe added two. Ehinger drove in five runs, while DeBeer had four along with a pair of homers. Deahl hit the other DePauw home run.

 

Tim Ernst led the 17-hit Stormy Petrel attack with four hits followed by Robert Johnston, Brad Sims, Brent Jones, Scott Casey and Michael Shaw with two each. Ernst drove in five runs and Scott Casey added three.

 

Mark Alson improved to 2-0 with the win, while Ryan Wallace suffered the loss. Brian Scott notched his first save.

 

The Tigers jumped out to a first-inning lead on Ehinger's sacrifice fly, but Oglethorpe took its first lead in the series with four runs in the bottom of the second. Ehinger's RBI single in the third and Mike Gonzalez's two-run single in the fourth knotted the score at 4-4.

 

DeBeer's two-run homer in the sixth followed by run-scoring singles from Gonzalez and John Younger and another sacrifice fly by Ehinger made it 9-4. Ernst hit a three-run homer to right in the sixth to close the gap to 9-7, but DeBeer's two-run shot to left center in the seventh made it 11-7. Casey's RBI double in the bottom of the seventh closed the Tigers' lead to 11-8.

 

The Tigers extended the lead to 16-8 with three in the eighth and two in the ninth. Ehinger's two-run triple and Zach Harris' sacrifice fly in the eighth was followed by Deahl's two-run homer in the ninth.

 

Oglethorpe continued to battle as Brent Jones' fielder's choice and Scott Casey's two-run homer made it 16-11. Ernst drove in one with a bases loaded single up the middle before Scott was called upon to replace Kerry Frost on the mound. Johnston cut the margin to 16-13 with a single, but Scott retired Sims on a grounder to end the game.
