Box Score 2 Atlanta, Ga. - DePauw improved to 14-9 overall and 7-0 in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference East Division play with a doubleheader sweep at Oglethorpe. The Tigers won the first game by a 2-1 score before taking the nightcap, 14-8. The Stormy Petrels dropped to 5-22 overall and 4-3 in SCAC play.
In the opening game, Tyson Becker scattered three hits over seven innings and allowed just one unearned run in improving to 2-2 on the season. J.T. Baker fell to 1-3 for Oglethorpe despite allowing just four hits and one earned run.
DePauw jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first on Ryan Sipe's solo home run before the Stormy Petrels evened the score in the bottom of the first. Tim Ernst led off with a walk, moved to second on a ground out and scored after stealing third with the attempt to throw him out going into left field.
The Tigers scored the eventual game-winner in the second as Hunter Slade reached second on a fielding error and scored on Greg DeBeer's two-out single to right.
In the nightcap, the Tigers once again raced to an early lead with two each in the first and second innings. In the first, John Younger and Matt Deahl led off with singles before Zach Harris and Slade brought each home with singles. In the second, DeBeer led off with a single, Younger drew a one-out walk and Deahl singled in DeBeer. Sipe followed with a double which scored Younger.
The Stormy Petrels scored two unearned runs in the second before the Tigers scored seven times in the fourth. Adrian Norris led off by reaching on an error. With one out, Deahl and Sipe hit consecutive singles to load the bases before Ehinger cleared them with a double down the left field line. Harris and Slade then followed with solo homers. Kevin McAteer doubled down the left field line, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on DeBeer's sacrifice fly to make it 11-2.
Oglethorpe scored six more unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to close the gap to 11-8. Ernst led off with a double and Charles Coke reached on a throwing error. With one out, Scott Casey was hit by a pitch and Jake Russ drew a walk to score Ernst. Robert Johnston singled home pinch-runner Nelson Davis before Nick Cassell cleared the bases with a double to right. Brian Asher doubled to left center to score Cassell and Ernst followed with a single but Slade's throw to the plate nailed Asher and ended the inning.
The Stormy Petrels started to mount a rally in the sixth when Anthony Sabala led off with a single to left. Brent Jones followed with a single to right, but Slade threw out Sabala at third for his second outfield assist in as many innings.
DePauw put the game away in the seventh as Sipe hit a two-out double before Ehinger singled him home. Ehinger stole second and scored on Harris' double. Slade then concluded the scoring with an infield popup that fell untouched and scored Harris.
Deahl, Sipe, Harris and Slade each had three hits while Younger and Ehinger each finished with two. Ehinger and Harris each drove in four runs and Slade finished with three. Ernst led Oglethorpe with three hits, while Johnston added two.
Dave Edmonds picked up the win by pitching six innings and allowing eight unearned runs. Jimmy Hess suffered the loss to fall to 2-6.
The two teams conclude their four-game series on Sunday with a single, nine-inning game at noon.
