Tigers split Saturday's games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Hanover, Ind. - DePauw moved to 5-7 on the season after splitting its two games this afternoon. The Tigers lost to the University of Wisconsin-Platteville by an 8-6 score and then blanked Hanover 8-0. Both games were played at Hanover.

P.J. Mitchell scattered eight hits over nine innings while striking out eight and not allowing a walk as the Tigers shut out host Hanover. DePauw scored three in the third as Mike Gonzalez crossed the plate after a Panthers error before Matt Deahl delivered an RBI single followed by Ryan Sipe's run-scoring double. Sipe's single in the fifth brought home Zach Harris to make it 4-0.

Deahl's seventh-inning single scored John Younger and the Tigers rounded out the scoring in the ninth with three more. Gonzalez led off with a single and went to third on Harris' double. Younger then singled to score both and Kevin Ehinger added a sacrifice fly later in the frame that scored Younger.

DePauw banged out 11 hits in the win with Deahl, Sipe, Gonzalez and Harris each collecting a pair. R.J. Forbes and Steve Siebenmorgen each had two for the Panthers. Mitchell improved to 2-1 with the win, while Brett Rauch slipped to 2-1.

In the earlier game with Wisconsin-Platteville, the Pioneers jumped out in front with two in the first on a two-run triple by David Reifenberger. Hunter Slade led off the DePauw second with a single and later scored on an infield error to cut the Wisconsin-Platteville lead to 2-1.

A DePauw error in the third allowed Ryan Levendoski to score, but the Tigers countered in the bottom half of the inning as Sipe led off with a double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Ehinger's ground out. Another DePauw error led to a Pioneers run in the fourth before Nick Pepper singled in the fifth to score Reifenberger and make it 5-2.

Adrian Norris singled with two outs in the sixth, moved to second on a single by Kyle Dobbs and scored on Younger's single.

The Pioneers extended their lead to 8-3 with three more in the seventh as EJ Zbikowski reached on an error to lead off the inning. Reifenberger singled and both moved up a base on a wild pitch. Pepper followed with a single that scored Zbikowski and Bailey Brueggen singled to score Reifenberger. After Brett Mandsager drew a walk, Mark Alson replaced Dave Edmonds on the mound and Mike Flood delivered a bases loaded sacrifice fly. Alson retired the next two batters to end the threat.

DePauw finished the scoring with three in the bottom of the seventh as Sipe led off with a triple and scored on Ehinger's single. Ehinger moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a ground out. Slade reached base and advanced to second on a Wisconsin-Platteville error that scored Ehinger before Norris singled to score Slade.

Sipe went four-for-five and Norris collected two hits as part of an 11-hit attack. Reifenberger and Pepper each had three hits for the Pioneers and Zbikowski added two in the win. Edmonds suffered the loss and dropped to 1-2 on the season, while Ryan Slaght picked up his first wins in as many decisions.

The Tigers travel to Indianapolis on Sunday to face Marian College at noon in a single, nine-inning game.
