Tigers Overcome Six-Run Deficit to Defeat Butler 10-8

Greencastle, Ind. (3-11-03) - Trailing 8-2 in the bottom of the sixth, DePauw rallied for eight runs in three innings to take a 10-8 win over visiting Butler in the Tigers' home opener at Walker Field.

The Tigers scored one in the sixth, three in the seventh and four in the eighth to pick up their first win of the season in three tries. Butler fell to 3-5 on the campaign.

The victory was DePauw's first over an NCAA Division I school since they beat Purdue at Walker Field in the final game of the 1987 season.

Butler scored twice in the third on Justin McKinley's two-run double and added a single run in the fourth on Jared Lowe's RBI single to right. Ryan Nance's two-run homer to right in the fifth made it 5-0.

DePauw's John Younger led off the bottom of the fifth with a triple to center and Zach Harris walked. A wild pitch allowed Younger to score and Harris to advance to second. Josh Boock followed with a single up the middle to make it 5-2.

Butler added to its lead with three in the sixth as Jonathan Day doubled home Jason Combs and McKinley singled to plate Day. The Bulldogs scored the third run on a DePauw error to extend the lead to 8-2.

The Tigers started their comeback with Kevin Ehinger's homer to left in the sixth. Kyle Dobbs tripled home Mike Gonzalez in the seventh and scored on a wild pitch. Ryan Sipe then doubled with two outs and scored on Ehinger's single to center to close the margin to 8-6.

Greg DeBeer reached base with one out in the eighth on a Butler error before Gonzalez tied the contest with a homer run to left center. Dobbs then singled to right and later stole second. Luke Rudisill's two-out bloop single to left plated Dobbs with the go-ahead run. Dobbs then stole second and came home on Sipe's base hit to right.

Dave Edmonds retired the Bulldogs in order in the ninth to pick up the save in relief of Mark Alson who earned the win with an inning of scoreless relief. Brian Smith suffered the loss for Butler.

Sipe and Ehinger paced the Tigers with three hits apiece, while Younger and Dobbs each had a pair. Ehinger and Gonzalez each drove in two runs for the Tigers. McKinley, Nance and Lowe each had two hits for Butler and McKinley drove in three in the loss. DePauw starter Tyson Becker struck out 10 in five innings.

The Tigers travel to Bloomington on Thursday for a 3 p.m. game with Indiana University.
