Box Score Jackson, Miss. - DePauw's hopes to repeat as Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference champions came to an end at Smith-Wills Stadium as Trinity knocked off the Tigers, 7-3. DePauw fell to 20-17 on the season, while Trinity improved to 33-8. Trinity advanced in the loser's bracket where they will face the loser of the Millsaps-Southwestern game.
Trinity jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Jeff Wright led off the game by reaching base on Jarrett Hunt's error. Wright stole second and advanced to third on a ground out. He scored on Cory Cassell's sacrifice fly.
DePauw evened the score in the bottom of the inning as John Stephens reached after Trinity first baseman Dash Kohlhausen's dropped a ball at first that would have put Stephens out. Stephens then stole second and moved to third on Ryan Sipe's fly out to center. Jarrett Hunt reached base after being hit by a David Smith pitch. Hunt was caught off first and got in a rundown that allowed Stephens to score.
Trinity responded with three in the third as Travis Steele led off with a single. He reached second when Scott Hamer's throw to second on Matthew Hoss' bunt was off the mark. Wright then singled to load the bases and Kenneth Sharp followed with a two-run double. Cassell drew a walk off of DePauw starter Daniel Mack to load the bases once again.
Jason Armstrong's hit a ground ball to first and Hamer's throw to the plate forced out Wright. Kohlhausen then lined a sacrifice fly to center to make it 4-1.
Trinity scored three more in the fourth as Steele's one-out single moved Huston O'Connor to second. One out later Wright singled in O'Conner. Dave Edmonds then replaced Mack on the mound and gave up a two-run triple on his second pitch to push the Trinity lead to 7-1.
John Younger doubled with one out in the bottom of the fourth and scored on Justin Denney's single. The Tigers added one more in the eighth as Jason Geringer and Scott Hamer each had one-out singles and Younger drove in Geringer with a sacrifice fly to center.
Wright, Sharp, Armstrong and Steele each had two hits to account for all eight of Trinity's hits. Sharp drove in four. Denney and Mike Gonzalez each had two hits for DePauw which also totaled eight for the game.
Smith improved to 8-1 on the season, while Mack slipped to 4-4. Edmonds pitched 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball for the Tigers.
