Tigers Fall in Late Innings to Ravens; Gillett Breaks Record

Box Score

Javair Gillett's fourth-inning double was hit 60th hit this season and broke the DePauw single-season record held by Adam Dill in 1999.

GREENCASTLE, IND. - An old adage about baseball is that when you think you've seen it all, you haven't. That probably could be said about Tuesday's DePauw-Anderson baseball game.

A game that featured a DePauw triple play, a sacrifice fly double play, a two-base hit that didn't get 10 feet away from home plate and a record-setting base hit by the Tigers' Javair Gillett, also included visiting Anderson rallying for two in the eighth and five in the ninth to wipeout a 6-4 DePauw lead on the way to an 11-6 win over the Tigers.

Anderson took a 2-0 lead with single runs in the first and fourth innings before the Tigers knotted the score at 2-2 in the fourth. Jarrett Hunt led off the inning with a single and moved to third on Gillett's double to left. The hit was Gillett's 60th of the season which broke the DePauw single-season record et by Adam Dill in 1999. They both came home when Dan Jones, who earlier extended his hitting streak to 11 games, singled to left center.

The Ravens regained the lead in the fifth when Kyle Rayl singled home Brent Hodges and Matt Ryan. John Stephens led off the DePauw fifth with a towering pop in front of the plate that the Ravens let drop and allowed Stephens to reach second. Steve Spasojevich singled and Hunt followed with a single through the left side to score Stephens. Gillett's single loaded the bases. Two outs later, Jones drew a walk that scored Spasojevich.

Jonathan Carey began the Anderson sixth with a double and moved to second on D.J. Smith's bunt single. Ryan then hit what appeared to be a double-play ball to Hunt who threw to Jeff Bardonaro at second for the first out. Bardonaro's relay nailed Ryan at first and Gillett then fired home to nail Carey for a triple play.

Catcher Dan Jones applies the tag on Anderson's Jonathan Carey to complete the sixth-inning triple play.

In the bottom of the sixth Stephens singled and stole second. Spasojevich and Hunt then walked. Gillett then hit a grounder to second, but the throw to get Hunt at second was off the mark and Stephens scored. Scott Hamer then lifted a fly ball to center that scored Spasojevich, but Gillett was thrown out at second after the run scored and the Tigers took a 6-4 lead.

With one out in the eighth, DePauw starter Dave Edmonds walked Carey and Smith before being replaced by Dan Sadowski. Hodges then doubled to right center to score Carey and Smtih and tied the game.

Anderson started the ninth with a pair of walks before Duke Behr tripled to make it 8-4. Adam Bollier added a run-scoring single that glanced off a drawn-in Nick Horvath's glove. Ryan later added an RBI double and Hodges an RBI single.

The Ravens banged out 18 hits with Ryan collecting four. Smith, Hodges and Rayl each added three. Stephens picked up three hits followed by Gillett, Hunt and Jones with two apiece. Hunt's two hits lifted his season total to 59 which now equals the second most in a DePauw season behind Gillett's 61.

DePauw fell to 22-14 on the season, while the Ravens improved to 15-10.

The Tigers return to action on Saturday when they host Washington (Mo.) University in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
