Tigers Split Twinbill with Hope

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The DePauw baseball team split a doubleheader with visiting Hope College and snapped a five-game losing streak, but it was the offensive explosion in the nightcap that probably has coach Matt Walker somewhat relieved.

The Flying Dutchmen took the first game by a 3-1 score in nine innings, while the Tigers topped Hope 12-6 in the second game. Hope opened the season at 1-1, while DePauw is now 3-5.

The Tigers finally put together some big innings in the second game as they scored three each in the third and fourth and six in the fifth. In all, eight of the nine starters collected hits as DePauw pounded out 13 hits.

Javair Gillett collected three to go seven for nine for the afternoon, while Jarrett Hunt, Dan Jones and Nick Horvath each added a pair. Hunt and Gillett each drove in three runs. Freshman Tyson Becker picked up the win in his first collegiate start as he struck out 10 batters in five innings. Nick Grinzinger had three hits and two RBI for Hope.

DePauw's Jason Lee and Hope's Nate DeVisser hooked up in a pitcher's duel in the first game. The Flying Dutchmen jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on Scott Houser's double that scored Casey Glass. The Tigers knotted the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth as Javair Gillett started with a two-out single and scored on Scott Hamer's single, but Hope scored two unearned runs in the ninth to take the win.

Houser had two hits for Hope, while Gillett went four for five for the Tigers. Freshman Duncan Yoon added two hits for DePauw, but the Tigers left 12 runners stranded.

The Tigers host Milwaukee School of Engineering in a 10:30 a.m. doubleheader on Sunday.
