Tigers Top Little Giants in Ninth

Senior Steve Spasojevich's sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the ninth set up Jarrett Hunt's game-winning single.

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - Jarrett Hunt's one-out single to right center in the bottom of the ninth scored John Stephens from second and lifted the Tigers to a 3-2 victory over visiting Wabash. DePauw improved to 5-7 on the season, while the Little Giants fell to 3-7.

Stephens led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to left and was moved to second on Steve Spasojevich's sacrifice bunt. Hunt then knocked Wabash starter Jake Martin's 1-2 pitch into right center to end the game.

Wabash scored its only two runs in the top of the first off of starter Tyson Becker as Martin reached base on a one-out walk and Brandon Candiano singled him to second. With two outs, Jake Knott delivered a two-run double to left center.

DePauw cut the lead in half in the second as Stephens drove in Jason Geringer with a sacrifice fly. The Tigers then tied the game in the third on Nick Horvath's fielder's choice grounder that score Javair Gillett with the Tigers' second unearned run.

Freshman Tyson Becker pitched shutout ball over his final seven innings in his second collegiate start.

The Little Giants totaled just four hits the rest of the way as only three base runners got beyond first base.

DePauw's best chance came in the bottom of the seventh after Spasojevich and Hunt led off with singles, but the Tigers couldn't score as the inning ended with the Little Giants turning a double play.

Becker, making his second collegiate start, allowed just two runs and six hits and struck out six in eight innings. Pat Creel notched his first win of the season as he pitched a scoreless ninth and struck out a pair.

Senior Javair Gillett bangs out a triple in the first inning for one of two extra base hits on the afternoon.

Hunt led the Tigers with three hits in five at-bats while Gillett went two for four. Gillett extended his hitting streak to ninth straight and Hunt to five. Spsojevich also collected a hit for the fifth straight game

Scott Shinkan collected a pair of hits for Wabash and Martin allowed just one earned run in 8 1/3 innings in suffering his third loss in four decisions.

The Tigers begin defense of their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference East Division title when they host Centre College for a pair of 11 a.m. doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
