Tigers Sweep Anderson; Remain Unbeaten in ICAC

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Greencastle, Ind.- Mike Thieken's RBI single in the bottom of the 13th gave the Tigers a 3-2 win in the nightcap of a doubleheader with Anderson and a sweep of the twinbill against the Ravens. The Tigers won for the 12th time in their last 14 games to improve to 18-11 overall and 6-0 in Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Anderson slipped to 20-12 and 4-6.

The thrilling doubleheader began with the Ravens scoring an unearned run in the first and adding another ally in the fourth on Todd Likens' solo homer in the fourth. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth, Bill Cartwright blasted a double to left that cleared the bases and gave DePauw the lead. Tom Heldt singled home Cartwright to make it 4-2.

Jeff Summers improved to 5-1 on the year and won his 11th straight ICAC decision. The win was his 21st against just five losses and he is just one shy of the DePauw record of 22 held by Chris Cox. In ICAC regular season games, the junior is 12-1 lifetime.

The Tigers fell behind in the nightcap in the first inning after Gibby Vargo doubled home Tim Bontrager. DePauw took the lead in the fourth after Greg Seitz slammed a homer onto Madison Street in right and Adam Dill and Cartwright added back-to-back doubles.

Anderson tied the score at 2-2 in the fifth as Likens hit a sacrifice fly to center that plated Kirby Miller. The teams then went scoreless for eight innings. Both teams had their chances, but spectacular fielding and strong pitching were the story. The Tigers put the potential winning run in scoring position in the seventh, eighth and 12th innings and the Ravens did the same in the seventh, eighth, 11th, and 12th frames. In fact, DePauw had the bases loaded with two outs and a full count in both the eighth and 12th innings, but failed to push the run across.

Heldt led off the 13th by reaching base on the second baseman's error. Brad Heizman's sacrifice bunt moved Heldt to second and Thieken then nailed a 1-1 pitch in the gap in right for the win.

Starter Kent Works allowed just one earned run in six innings before giving way to rookie Steve Westman who pitched scoreless ball for five innings. Jeff Hartzell relieved him and pitched two perfect innings to pick up his first win against two losses.

Anderson's Jamie Roudebush threw nearly 200 pitches in going the distance and picking up his fourth loss in eight decisions.

The Tigers travel to Wabash College on Saturday for a 1 p.m. ICAC doubleheaders.
