Springfield, Ohio - After a 7-2 loss in the opening game of its North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader at Wittenberg, DePauw came back with a 9-1 win in the nightcap and remained in a first-place tie in the conference standings with the host Tigers. DePauw moved to 19-11 overall and 8-2 in conference play, while Wittenberg dropped to 18-12 overall and 8-2 in the NCAC.
Wittenberg jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning of game one as Gada Bryant drove in Meghan McCans with a single and later scored on Ava Cyphers' grounder. Kayla Drake then delivered an RBI double. Bryant scored on an error in the second after stealing third to push the lead to 4-0.
The Tigers reached the board in the third as
Ella Ohrvall singled, moved to second on
Kelsey Schneider's sacrifice bunt, and scored on
Eliza Rammel's double.
Ella Kuenster's leadoff homer in the fourth cut the deficit to 4-2.
McCans tripled in the fourth, scoring Rowan Goodpasture and Kristen Wright's two-run homer in the fifth wrapped up the scoring.Â
Kunester had two of DePauw's seven hits, while McCans, Bryant, Wright and Kennedy Reed each had two of Wittenberg's 11 hits.
Alex Romero-Salas dropped to 10-7, with Julie Hall improving to 7-4.
DePauw got out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning of the second game as Kuenster and
Paige Brady singled before
Hanna Coffel walked. After
Avery Welsh reached on a fielder's choice that forced Kuenster at the plate,
Libby Minobe followed with a two-run single and Schneider an RBI single.
Wittenberg's lone run came in the bottom of the second as Bailey Nichols doubled home Emma Lohri.Â
Schneider's run-scoring single and Rammel's two-run single made it 6-1 in the sixth before Kuenster singled home
Angelese Cruz in the seventh and Minobe plated a pair to wrap up the scoring.
Minobe had four of DePauw's 15 hits, while Kuenster added three. Schneider, Romero-Salas and Brady each had two hits in the win. Three Wittenberg hitters collected one hit each.
Izzy Deveau improved to 7-4 after allowing just three hits with three strikeouts and no walks, while Phoebe Underwood dropped to 6-6.
DePauw travels to John Carroll on Saturday, April 25 for a 1 p.m. NCAC doubleheader.
