Kokomo, Ind. - DePauw wrapped up its weekend series with Manchester with a doubleheader split as the Spartans won the opener, 10-9, and the Tigers came back for a 10-6 victory in the nightcap. The Tigers moved to 5-3, while Manchester is now 3-7.
In the opener, Manchester reached the board first as Max Horner hammered a two-out grand slam.
The Tigers responded in the bottom of the frame as
Tyler Walkey drew a bases-loaded walk before
Max Bond delivered a sacrifice fly with another run scoring on the play after the relay throw was mishandled.
Alex Westfield's two-run single in the third pushed the Spartans' lead to 6-3 and the teams were scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. Walkey led off with a walk and stole second before Bond doubled home Walkey.
Aidan Howard's single plated Bond and Howard came home on
Louis Florida's bases-loaded single to even the score at 6-6.
Beau Kaler's two-run single in the eighth and Evann Schmidtendorff's two-run double gave Manchester a 10-6 advantage.Â
The Tigers closed the gap in the eighth as Howard's double scored Walked and
Zach O'Connell drove in two with a two-bagger.
DePauw loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, but a fielder's choice ended the game.
Howard had three of DePauw's 13 hits, while Bond,
Grady Johnson and Florida collected three apiece.
Horner and Michael Dierckman each had three of Manchester's 11 hits with Westfield adding two.
Nate Tencza dropped to 0-1 for the Tigers, while Axel Cummings improved to 1-0 with the relief win. Luke Diebold picked up the save after pitching 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
In the nightcap, Manchester grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on Donavin Massing's RBI single that scored Dierckman, but the Tigers responded in the bottom of the second when Florida doubled and
Nolan Osterling hit a two-run homer to right center.
Howard's single in the third brought home Bond and extended DePauw's lead to 3-1. Massing's fourth-inning double scored Joel Kennedy and fourth-inning run-scoring doubles by Horner and Kennedy gave Manchester a 4-3 lead.
DePauw took the lead for good in the fifth as Bond drew a two-out walk and moved to third on Howard's single before Johnson's three-run homer to center made it 6-4.
Manchester added a single score in the sixth, but DePauw matched that with Johnson's sacrifice fly in the seventh. The Tigers tacked on three in the eighth on RBI singles from Walkey and Bond. Walkey later scored on a wild throw as the Spartans tried to double up Bond at first after Howard's liner to short.
Kennedy wrapped up the scoring with a leadoff homer in the ninth.
Walkey had three of DePauw's 10 hits, while Howard and Osterling each had two. Kennedy, Dierckman and Massing each had three of Manchester's 13 hits with Horner adding two.Â
Justin Benes improved to 1-1, while
Talan Loza recorded his first save. Jake McGrath took the loss.Â
The Tigers open the home portion of their schedule on Saturday, March 14, with a Noon doubleheader against Grove City.
