Tigers Sweep Grove City in Home Openers

Greencastle, Ind. – A three-run bottom of the eighth in game two of its doubleheader against Grove City lifted DePauw to a sweep of the Wolverines by scores of 8-7 and 12-9 in the home opener at Walker Field. The Tigers improved to 7-3, while Grove City dropped to 5-8.

In the opener, Grove City grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second on an unearned run, but DePauw came right back with five in the bottom half of the inning. Nolan Whitehead's sacrifice fly scored Louis Florida before Tyler Walkey delivered a two-run double that brought home Zach O'Connell and Bryson Dorsey. Max Bond plated Walkey with a single and later came home on Grady Johnson's base hit to make it 5-1.

Whitehead's sacrifice fly in the third scored Florida and Dorsey's single in the fifth scored Florida to push the lead to 7-1.

The Wolverines added a single run in the sixth as Caleb Backos drove in Colin Marinpetro with a single. DePauw's final run came in the bottom of the sixth as Johnson crossed the plate after Florida grounded out to first, but the Grove City first baseman threw to second to try to get Cuinn Morrow as he returned to the base.

Grove City nearly came all the way back in the ninth as Nick Remish and Kallen Durbin each had RBI singles before John McIntyre drove in Remish with a sacrifice fly. Marinpetro and Durbin scored on a two-out error by the Tigers, but a ground out ended the game.

Dorsey and Walkey each had three of DePauw's 13 hits, while Aidan Howard, Johnson and Zach O'Connell added two each.

Marinpetro and Backos each had two of Grove City's nine hits.

Pearse Riendeau improved to 3-0 after going six innings and allowing just one earned run. Lucas Stephan collected his second save. Kenny Lavrich dropped to 0-2.

In the nightcap, the Wolverines scored four in the opening frame before DePauw countered with six in the bottom of the second starting with back-to-back two-run singles by Walkey and Bond. Two more came home on Johnson's single.

Backos delivered a single in the third that brought home David Chandler to trim the DePauw lead to 6-5, but DePauw added one in the fourth on Whitehead's single that scored Howard.

Remish's solo homer in the fifth again brought Grove City to within one run, but Walkey's single in the fifth scored Florida and Nolan Osterling came home on a wild pitch.

The Wolverines evened the score at 9-9 as Backos doubled home Marinpetro with Durbin following with an RBI single and Ben Barnes a run-scoring grounder.

Bond led off the DePauw eighth with a double and moved to third on Howard's single. Johnson's sacrifice fly brought home Bond and, after Whitehead walked and O'Connell was hit by a pitch, Florida drove in a pair with a single to push the lead to 12-9.

Howard and Johnson each had three of DePauw's 15 hits with Bond and Florida adding two each.

Remish led the Wolverines with three of their 10 hits with Kyle Rhineberger, Marinpetro and Backos each adding two.

Charlie Hawk improved to 1-0, while Noah Mackie dropped to 0-2.

DePauw returns to action on Saturday, March 21, with a 3:45 p.m. doubleheader against Elmhurst in Davenport, Fla.
