Kokomo, Ind. - DePauw scored five runs in the top of the first and then added four in the eighth and two in the ninth on the way to an 11-7 win over Manchester. The Tigers improved to 4-2, while the Spartans dropped to 2-6.
Max Bond led off the game with a single and moved to second on
Nolan Whitehead's one-out single.
Zach O'Connell drove in Bond with a double and
Aidan Howard brought home Whitehead with a single.
Louis Florida followed with a three-run homer to make it 5-0.
Manchester scored one in the second as Michael Dierckman hit a one-out triple and scored on a passed ball.
The Spartans added two more in the fifth as Owen Ritchie and Beau Kaler led off with walks and Max Horner doubled home Ritchie. Evann Schmidtendorff's sacrifice fly brought home Kaler.
The Tigers loaded the bases in the eighth as two walks sandwiched a hit batter.
Bryson Dorsey reached on a fielder's choice and an error on the play allowed O'Connell to score.
Tyler Walkey followed with an RBI single before Bond drove in a pair with a single to make it 9-3.
Manchester countered with a four-run bottom of the eighth as Cam Bortone led off with a double and moved to third on Donavin Massing's single before Alex Westfield walked to load the bases. Ritchie was hit by a pitch which scored Bortone and Horner delivered a bases-clearing double to close the gap to 9-7.
O'Connell led off the DePauw ninth with a double and Howard hit a two-run homer to right.
Bond had three of DePauw's 14 hits with O'Connell, Howard and Florida adding two each. Horner had five of Manchester's 10 hits and drove in four with Massing totaling two hits.
Pearse Riendeau improved to 2-0 with the win after starting and pitching five innings, while
Johnny Curry collected his first save by pitching a scoreless 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts and no walks. Ty Layson dropped to 1-1 with the loss.
The teams square off in a Noon doubleheader tomorrow at Championship Park in Kokomo.
