Davenport Fla. - In its final game at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational, DePauw fell to Kalamazoo by a 13-5 score. The Tigers dropped to 12-5, while the Hornets moved to 16-2.
Kalamazoo took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Robert Newland drove in Cade Preissing with a single and DePauw matched that in the third after
Bryson Dorsey led off with a double, moved to third on
Tyler Walkey's sacrifice bunt and scored when
Aidan Howard reached on an error.
The Hornets took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on Cam Kelly's bunt which scored Caleb Moore from third.
DePauw took its first lead in the fourth as
Louis Florida led off by being hit by a pitch and advanced to third on
Cuinn Morrow's double.
Zach O'Connell's single brought home Florida and Morrow scored on an error as Dorsey reached on a fielder's choice.
The lead was short-lived as Kalamazoo scored a pair in the fifth on Ryar Rinehart's double that scored Preissing and Newland. The Hornets blew the game open with a six-run sixth as Jack Friesen drove in Kelly with a single and Preissing brought home Jackson Isaacs after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Newland reached on a fielder's choice which allowed Friesen to score before a DePauw throwing error allowed two more to cross the plate. Moore's RBI single pushed the lead to 10-3.
Howard's RBI single in the sixth made it 10-4, but the Hornets tacked on three more in the seventh on Preissing's bases-loaded walk and Rinehart's sacrifice fly before Austin Keur scored on a wild pitch.
Grady Johnson's single in the eighth plated Walkey for the last run of the contest.
Dorsey had three of DePauw's nine hits, while Morrow added two. Newland had three of Kalamazoo's 11 hits with Moore and Isaacs each adding two.
Lucas Stephan dropped to 1-1, while Ben Van Nes improved to 3-0.
The Tigers open North Coast Athletic Conference play on Saturday, March 28, with a Noon doubleheader at Wittenberg.
