DePauw Sweeps Doubleheader with Elmhurst

Davenport, Fla. - DePauw opened its spring break trip with a doubleheader sweep of Elmhurst as it won the opener, 9-8, and blanked the Bluejays in the nightcap, 8-0. The Tigers moved to 9-3 and extended their win streak to five, while Elmhurst dropped to 5-10.

Elmhurst grabbed a 1-0 lead in the opener before the Tigers struck for two in the third. Bryson Dorsey led off the inning with a double, moved to third on Tyler Walkey's sacrifice bunt and scored on Max Bond's triple. Bond then scored on Aidan Howard's grounder.

The Bluejays evened the score at 2-2 as Ryder Johnson led off with a single and moved to third on Rock Smith's base hit. Johnson came home after Smith was caught stealing.

Louis Florida's triple in the fourth scored Cuinn Morrow who led off the inning with a single. Zach O'Connell then singled home Florida before Dorsey doubled and Walkey delivered an RBI single to give the Tigers a 5-2 advantage.

Tommy Wichgers' fourth-inning grounder scored Brett Vercruysse and cut the DePauw lead to 5-3.

The Tigers scored four in the fifth as Florida brought home Howard with a single before Morrow came home on a wild pitch and Nolan Whitehead drove in a pair with a single.

Zach Konrad's double in the fifth and Vercruysse's single closed the gap to 9-5. The Bluejays trimmed the deficit to 9-8 in the seventh as Smith hit a two-run homer and Conrad followed with a solo homer. Elmhurst added a pair of singles, but a double play and ground out ended the game.

Dorsey had three of DePauw's 11 hits with Florida and O'Connell each totaling two.

Conrad and Vercruysse each had three of Elmhurst's 12 hits with Johnson and Smith finishing with two each.

Pearse Riendeau improved to 4-0 with nine strikeouts in six innings, while Charlie Hawk collected the save. Adan Nieves dropped to 0-2 with the loss.

In the second game, the Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first as Morrow's fielder's choice plated Bond and O'Connell drove in two with a single.

Whitehead's third-inning single brought home Grady Johnson, while Morrow scored on a passed ball in the fifth. Dorsey's sacrifice fly in the fifth extended the lead to 6-0.

Howard hit a solo homer in the sixth before Johnson came home when Whitehead reached on an error.

Johnson had three of DePauw's 10 hits and Walkey added two. Four different Bluejays collected one hit apiece.

Jamison Lewis improved to 2-1 with the complete game shutout as he struck out eight in seven innings. Aidan Nelson dropped to 0-1.

DePauw faces Williams in a 2:30 doubleheader tomorrow.
