Bloomington, Ill. - DePauw defeated Illinois Wesleyan 24-5 on the road. Two different Tigers scored 5 goals on the afternoon. DePauw improves to 2-4 and IWU falls to 3-4.
Kate Sullivan and Kate Leone led the Tigers offensively with both players scoring five goals in the contest. Five different Tigers netted goals in the first quarter where DePauw raced out to a 10-1 lead. Kai Coffee opened the scoring just 18 seconds into the game with an unassisted goal. Sullivan, Leone, Katie Jauchius, and Mary Mason were the other scorers of the 1st quarter.
The Tigers' offense slowed down in the second quarter but the defense remained strong. Freshman Mia Garofalo scored her 1st career goal to open the 2nd quarter. Mason added two more goals and Sullivan added another. The defense pitched a shutout and held the Titans scoreless for the final 20 minutes of the first half to send DePauw to the locker room with a 14-1 lead.
The Titans scored the first goal of the 2nd half before DePauw closed the 3rd quarter with five unanswered goals. In the 3rd quarter Coffee, Mason, Leone, and Jauchius each added a goal and Maya Zalewski scored her first two goals of her career including one on the penalty kill.
The Titans opened the 4th quarter with a three goal run. Kate Leone scored two consecutive goals before Delana Underwood and Garofalo each added one more goal to close the game for DePauw.
Katie Jauchius led the Tigers' offense with five assists to put her at seven points on the afternoon. Sullivan trailed with three assists of her own to give her a team-high of eight points. Leone's two assists tied her with Jauchis' seven point tally. Mason led the team with seven draw controls followed by Coffee with five.
Defensively, Niamh Callahan made two saves and gave up one goal for a 66% save percentage. Meredith Buti took over in the second half and made one save on four goals allowed for a 20% save percentage. Mason led the defense with four caused turnovers and three ground balls.
The Titans were led by Maddie Gibson who tallied two goals and two assists. Goalkeeper Marli Brown made 16 saves for a 40% save percentage.
The Tigers are back in action at Reavis Stadium Saturday March 14th at 1 p.m. when they take on Centre.
