Greencastle, Ind. - The DePauw women's lacrosse team fell to Rhodes College 16-12 on Saturday, February 28. The Tigers drop to 1-3 on the season while the Lynx improve to 2-0.
Both offenses started out strong in the first quarter, scoring five goals apiece. Rhodes opened the scoring early, but DePauw's Kate Leone and Kate Sullivan scored within one minute of each other to give the Tigers a 2-1 advantage. DePauw would go on to take a 5-2 lead, but Rhodes evened the score after three unanswered goals.
The Tigers responded well in the second quarter, led by Mary Mason, who scored three unassisted goals in the period. Katie Jachius jumped in on the action with a little over a minute left in the first half to give DePauw a 9-7 advantage.
The Lynx seized the momentum in the third quarter, shutting out the Tigers and tacking on six goals to take a 13-9 lead.
DePauw fought well in the fourth quarter, with Rosalie Tasker, Leone, and Sullivan each scoring a goal, but the Lynx lead proved to be too much as the Tigers fell 16-12.
Mason led the offense with three goals and three assists. Sullivan, Jachius, and Leone each tallied two goals, with Jachius adding two assists. Sydney Shields recorded two caused turnovers as Mason and Sullivan each secured four draw controls. In goal for the Tigers, Niam Callahan notched seven saves with a 30.4% save percentage.
For the Lynx, Peyton Stevens, Maddie Bevier, Alban Erdle, and Caroline Kardian all scored three goals apiece. Kardian dished out three assists to boot. Delaney O'Mailey secured five ground balls as Anna Samuelson led the defense with three caused turnovers. Kardian tallied a team-high five draw controls. Anabelle Kinzel recorded nine saves in goal to go along with four ground balls.
DePauw hits the road for a match against Hope College on Saturday, March 7, at 1 p.m.
