Greencastle, Ind. - Visiting Mount Union scored eight straight goals over a 12-minute stretch of the first half and topped the Tigers by an 18-12 score in the season-opening game for both squads.
DePauw took a 4-2 lead midway through the opening period after goals by
Kaitlyn Bach and
Kate Leone, but the Purple Raiders responded with five straight to close the stanza and three consecutive to open the second to take a 10-4 lead.
The Tigers closed the gap to 11-8 at halftime and were still within three at 13-10 after
Katie Jauchius' score with 6:03 remaining in the third. Mount Union scored the next three to push the margin to six and the Tigers were no closer than four the rest of the way.
Jauchius led DePauw with three goals, while
Emerson Perea and
Rosalie Tasker each tallied two.Â
Kai Coffee led DePauw with three ground balls, while
Kate Sullivan totaled five draw controls and
Isabel Ramirez finished with four caused turnovers.
Haylee Handrahan led Mount Union with four goals followed by Lizzie Dorley, Mae Pawlikowski and Ella Nejad with two goals each.
Kaitlyn Kuczinski paced Mount Union with three ground balls with Emma Labbe and Anna Weinel each totaling four draw controls. Emma Grell led with three caused turnovers.
Niamh Callahan had five saves in goal for DePauw with
Meredith Buti totaling one. Kuczinski finished with eight saves for the Purple Raiders.
DePauw hosts Carthage on Saturday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m.
