Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw field hockey defeated Allegheny Saturday afternoon 4-2, extending their conference record to 4-0.
The Gators claimed the first goal of the game at 9:12 off a penalty corner. The Tigers retaliated with a goal of their own to tie it up 1-1 at 13:19. Freshman forward Liza Flower scored off an assist from sophomore forward Rosie Ondrla from the top of the shooting circle.
DePauw drew a penalty stroke at 25:58 following two shots on goal made by the Tigers. Junior defender Helen Harpenau made the goal, scoring her first of the season in the left edge of the cage.Â
Leading 2-1 at halftime, DePauw edged Allegheny 8-4, but were even keel in corners with two each.Â
Coming into the third quarter, sophomore midfielder Brooke Morgan connected with junior forward Ellie Lochhead following a penalty corner to give the Tigers another insurance goal at 34:21. Lochhead delivered the ball to Morgan who made a shot from the far right side of the shooting circle, narrowly avoiding defenders and making it past the goalkeeper with impeccable timing to roll past the right post of the cage.
Five-minutes later, junior forward Sophie Flynn dribbled past defenders at 39:00 to make a long back stick shot from the far left edge of the shooting circle to put DePauw ahead 4-1.
Freshman goalie, Colby Durbin was substituted off the field at the beginning of the fourth quarter for junior Olivia Streifel. The Gators proceeded to score their final goal of the game at 59:36 with seconds to spare in regulation.Â
Flynn led the team with three shots on goal, Harpenau tallied two, and Ondrla, Morgan, and Flower recorded one each.Â
Durbin tallied 45-minutes in goal, recording four saves. Streifel subbed in for 15-minutes, tallying four saves of her own.Â
DePauw outshot Allegheny 15-10, but the Gators held an edge in penalty corners, 8-3.Â
With the win, DePauw moves to 6-2 (4-0) overall, while Allegheny drops to 5-5 (3-1). The Tigers will return to action, Sunday, October 4th at home to take on Washington & Jefferson for senior day at 12 p.m. for a conference match up.
