Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw shot a season-best 55.6 percent from the field, but 11th-ranked John Carroll battled back from an 11-point deficit and handed the Tigers an 83-78 North Coast Athletic Conference loss. DePauw dropped to 7-6 overall and 0-2 in the NCAC, while the Blue Streaks improved to 10-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Blue Streaks held a 14-10 lead in the first before DePauw closed the period on an 8-3 run to take an 18-14 advantage into the quarter break. John Carroll regained the lead briefly in the opening minute of the second before
Riley Mont and and
Diana Burgher hit jumpers which sandwiched a
Lily Huntzinger three and gave DePauw a 25-19 lead.
The Tigers led by as many as 11 after
Tori Allen knocked in a three at the 4:38 mark, but the Blue Streaks scored the next seven and DePauw took a 38-34 lead into the intermission.
DePauw's lead went back to 11 after Huntzinger nailed a three with 6:59 left in the third. John Carroll rattled off seven straight later in the period to close the gap to 53-51 with 2:00 left in the third. The Tigers carried a 60-56 advantage into the fourth quarter and still held a 69-68 advantage after Mont hit 1-of-2 free throws with 3:41 remaining.
Ava Ryncarz countered with a three to give John Carroll its first lead since early in the second.
Olivia Hart's bucket tied the game again, but Ryncarz hit a pair of free throws which started a 6-0 run and gave the Blue Streaks a 77-71 lead at the 1:43 mark.
Mont answered with a three and later knocked in a jumper with 34 seconds left to cut the deficit to 77-76. Carly Perusek's two free throws with 30 seconds remaining started a stretch of six straight charity tosses made which sealed the win.
Hart led the Tigers with a career-high 20 points, while Mont followed with 18 and Burgher added 10. Hart grabbed five rebounds and Allen dished out four assists.
Ryncarz led all scorers with 26 with Graci Semptimphelter added 20. Perusek finished with 14 and team-highs of six rebounds and six steals with Brooke Laub scoring 11 and handing out five assists.
DePauw shot 55.6 percent for the game to John Carroll's 58.3 percent. The Blue Streaks hit 13-of-24 from 3-point range and knocked in all 14 free throw attempts. DePauw was 5-of-11 from beyond the arc and outrebounded John Carroll, 26-18.
The Tigers return to action on Saturday, Jan. 10, with a 2 p.m. NCAC game at Oberlin.
