Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw closed a 26-point deficit to six, but John Carroll held on for a 93-83 North Coast Athletic Conference win over the Tigers. DePauw dropped to 10-3 overall and 3-1 in the NCAC and had its six-game win streak snapped, while the Blue Streaks improved to 10-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
The Tigers held a four-point lead in the opening two minutes of the game before the Blue Streaks went on a 12-4 run to take a 14-10 advantage. DePauw tied the contest at 22-22, but a 9-1 John Carroll stretch lifted the Blue Streaks to a 32-23 lead. John Carroll's largest lead of the half came at 53-36 and they went to the break leading, 54-38.
A 14-2 run early in the second half propelled John Carroll to its largest lead of the game at 73-47 with 13:47 left. The Tigers still faced a 23-point deficit at 82-59 with 9:06 remaining before going on a 21-4 run over the next 6:07 to close to within 86-80 with 2:59 left. Jack Zapolnik's three-point play with 2:28 left started a 5-0 stretch which put the game away.
Joe Smith led five DePauw double-figure scorers with 18 points, while
Caleb Washington and
Sam Jacobs each added 13.
Reph Stevenson chipped in 12 points and grabbed eight rebounds with
Brady Kunka scoring 10. Smith and Jacobs handed out four assists each.
Luke Chicone led John Carrol with 26 points with Kasey Hunt chipping in 24 along with four steals. Kyle Irwin and Aidan Fitzgerald each hauled down six rebounds while Chicone and Sean Collins dished out four assists apiece.
DePauw shot 43.3 percent from the field and hit 10-of-26 from 3-point range, while John Carroll connected on 48.6 percent from the floor and hit 6-of-23 from beyond the arc. The Tigers held a 42-38 rebounding edge, but the Blue Streaks led in second-chance points, 20-14. DePauw committed 20 turnovers to John Carroll's 10 and the guests outscored the Tigers in the paint, 54-34, and on fast break chances, 29-6.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 7, when they host Wittenberg in a 7 p.m. game.
