Greencastle, Ind. - Visiting Muskingum fought off match point in the fourth set and won the final three points before taking the fifth set for a 3-2 (20-25, 25-16, 18-25, 26-24, 15-6) victory over DePauw on the opening night of the DePauw Invitational. The Fighting Muskies improved to 4-1, while the Tigers dropped to 2-3.
DePauw never trailed in the opening set nor did Muskingum in the second. The Tigers jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the third and held on to take a 2-1 match lead.
A tight fourth set ensued with seven ties and four lead changes and the Tigers were on the verge of winning the match with a 24-23 lead. Muskingum evened the match with two kills and an ace. The teams were tied 3-3 in the fifth set before the Fighting Muskies scored the next four and 10 of the next 12 to take control.
Jen Proeh paced the Tigers with 12 kills while hitting .423. and
Julia McWaters added 23 assists.
Kendall Herrick had three of the Tigers' nine aces with
Grace Myers pacing the squad with 35 digs and Proeh leading with six block assists.
Mackenzie Krous paced Muskingum with 16 kills with Alexis Bradley totaling 26 assists and four aces. Katharine Clayton led with 28 digs and Josie Niemeyer had one solo block and two assists.
Muskingum outhit the Tigers, .126-.116 and held a 56-46 edge in kills. Each team had nine aces with with DePauw holding a 10-3 advantage in blocks.
DePauw hosts Trine at 11 a.m. tomorrow and Greenville at 1 p.m.
