Greencastle, IN. – DePauw women's soccer (2-0 NCAC) held a strong defensive front to defeat Greenville (0-2, UPAC) , 2-1, Monday afternoon.
The first half was highlighted by failed offensive runs from both sides.
Ellie Mahan tried to pass the ball left across the net to
KJ Ely but were interrupted by defenders. Greenville attempted to make a clear drive for the goal but
Ellie Mahan picked up the pass to cut off the breakaway before the Panthers could score.
Macy Happe attempted to find the back of the net with a long curved free kick, evading three defenders.
Sadie Gibson capitalized on a defensive scramble to score the first goal of the game.
Sophia Grueninger advanced on the goal, launched the ball at the Panthers' goalkeeper, and Gibson took advantage of the disoriented defense to
give the Tigers a goal.
Entering the second half with a 2-0 lead, the Tigers held strong until Greenville's Kylie Petroski broke away from the pack, evading
Aubree Empie to the left and advancing on an empty net. Two Tigers scrambled to defend the open territory but to no avail, the Panthers equalized the score 1-1 in the 57th minute of play.
With added pressure, the Tigers grew more offensively impatient often slipping on the new turf. DePauw later broke the tie with a goal in the 66th minute, with
Katharine Lacy rocketing a shot into the net for a solo goal.
The Tigers maintained momentum, releasing an offensive run with only eight minutes left in regulation. DePauw doubled shots made in the second half. DePauw edged Greenville in shots 12-7.
DePauw will return to action Wednesday at 5:00 pm when they host Franklin for another non conference match up.
