DePauw Unveils 2025 Athletics Hall of Fame Class

Greencastle, Ind. - Five alumni and one staff member have been selected for induction into the DePauw Athletics Hall of Fame. The public ceremony for the class of 2025 is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025, in Kresge Auditorium in DePauw's Judson and Joyce Green Center for the Performing Arts.

Inductees include: 

Courtney Lauer Carlson '11 (women's track and field)
Tom Downham '88 (football)
Kathy Hesse Driggs '91 (field hockey)
Eric Fruth '02 (men's cross country/men's track and field)
Craig Nelson '80 (men's soccer)
Bill Wagner (athletics communications)

Courtney Lauer Carlson (2011), Women's Track and Field
Carlson earned three all-America honors including two in the heptathlon and one in the pentathlon. In the pentathlon, she finished fourth at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, while in the heptathlon she placed sixth at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and third in 2011. The 2011 Amy Hasbrook Award recipient was an eight-time all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference award winner including three conference titles (two in the javelin and one in the high jump). She was the Female Athlete of the Meet at the 2011 SCAC Championships after scoring 42 points across seven events (including a win in the javelin, and runner-up finishes in the triple jump, long jump, and shot put). Carlson was selected to the SCAC 30th Anniversary Team in 2021 and still holds the program record in the javelin. Her pentathlon and heptathlon records, set in 2011, stood until 2022. Lauer also earned three varsity letters as a member of the DePauw women's basketball team.

Tom Downham (1988), Football
Downham was a four-year letterman as a kicker and, in 1986, was named to the Pizza Hut All-America First Team and Associated Press Little All-America Honorable Mention.  He holds the school record for longest field goal (54 yards vs. Kentucky Wesleyan, 1987) and maintained the program record of 101 extra-points made and 28 field goals made until 2016. His 52 consecutive extra-points converted remain a program record. Downham led the 1986 team in scoring with 66 points and broke the single-season record with 13 field goals which lasted until 2016. He ranks 12th in program history with 185 career points which is third among kickers. Downham was one of 11 kickers invited to the 1988 NFL pre-draft camp in Indianapolis. In 1988, he received tryouts with the New York Giants, New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, Cleveland Browns and the Washington Redskins.

Eric Fruth (2002), Cross Country/Track and Field
Fruth earned two all-America honors at the 2002 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships as he finished fifth in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. He was a three-time Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference champion in the 1,500 meters (2000, 2001, 2002) and twice won the 5,000 meters (2000, 2002) while finishing second in 2001. Fruth was the 2000 and 2001 SCAC Men's Cross Country individual champion and was ninth in 1999. He graduated with four program indoor records in the 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters and as a member of the distance medley relay. Fruth's three outdoor records came in the 3,000, 5,000 and 10,000 meters. He was named to the SCAC's 15th anniversary team.

Kathy Hesse Driggs (1991), Field Hockey
Hesse was a first team regional all-America selection in 1989 and 1990 and second team in 1988. A team tri-captain and team MVP in 1990, Hesse helped lead the Tigers to the first NCAA appearance in program history and a 15-3-3 record. During her four seasons, the Tigers posted a 64-17-5 record including a program-record 17 wins in 1987 which was broken in 2012. The 1990 all-Hoosier Conference for Women selection is still tied for third in school history with 64 career goals and tied for sixth with 139 points. Her 24 goals in 1990 are tied for third in program history and her 51 points that year are tied for sixth.

Craig Nelson (1980), Men's Soccer
Nelson earned all-Illinois-Indiana Collegiate Soccer Conference honors in 1977, 1978 and 1979 and was the team MVP in 1978 and 1979. His 49 career goals rank second in program history and his 100 career points are fourth. He scored 20 goals in 1978 which still ranks in a tie for second. On three occasions he scored a program-record four goals in a game including the final game of his career when he scored all four in a 4-1 win over Wabash. Nelson had an additional three games in which he tallied three goals each. In the finale of the 1978 season, he delivered the game-winning goal with five seconds left in the second overtime to give the Tigers a 3-2 victory over the Little Giants. Nelson was part of the 1977 squad which earned the program's first appearance in the NCAA Division III postseason.

Bill Wagner, Athletics Communications
Wagner joined the DePauw staff as sports information director in December 1986 and was named assistant athletics director for athletics communications in 2019. He has served as the media host for over 100 NCAA Division III competitions including three national championships. Wagner also served on the College Sports Communicators (CSC) board of directors from 2005-08 and became the first president of DIII-SIDA from 2008 through 2011. A 2014 CSC Hall of Fame inductee, Wagner has worked as a district coordinator for the Academic All-America® program since 2002. Wagner has received numerous publications awards through CSC including a "Best in the Nation" award for the 1996 and 1997 football media guides and for the cover of the 1988 football media guide. The 2024 DePauw University Outstanding Gold Spirit Award recipient was presented the Bob Williams Helping Hand Award by the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association in 2025.
