Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap of its North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader with Wooster, but the Fighting Scots rallied for a 7-6 win which followed a 14-3 victory in the opener for the sweep. The Tigers dropped to 7-17 overall and 1-5 in the NCAC, while Wooster improved to 18-5 overall and 6-0 in conference play.
In the opener, Wooster took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles from Colin Leslie and Alex Gerdenich, but the Tigers tied it in the bottom of the frame as
Max Bond led off with a homer and
Grady Johnson scored when
Louis Florida reached on an error.
Ryan Kramer's grand slam in the second and his two-run single in the fourth gave Wooster an 8-2 advantage.
Max Bond drove in
Nate Heflin with a fourth-inning single, but Wooster countered in the fifth as Luke Rizzo scored on a wild pitch and Zack Barienbrock hit a three-run homer to left. Leo Widtmann's seventh-inning two-run shot made it 14-3 and the Fighting Scots held the Tigers scoreless in the bottom of the inning to wrap up the win with the run rule.
Bond, Johnson and
Drew Straub each had two of DePauw's eight hits. Kramer had four of Wooster's 10 hits and Leslie added two.
Charlie Hawk dropped to 0-4, while Dame Frayne improved to 3-1 and finished with nine strikeouts in five innings.Â
In the nightcap, Bond led off the first with a walk and moved to third on Johnson's single before
Carter Knoll delivered a three-run homer.
Zach O'Connell singled home Straub and Heflin to make it 5-0.
Bhatt's second-inning single scored Nathaniel Huxtable and Bhatt crossed the plate on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 5-2.
Wooster cut the DePauw lead to 5-4 in the sixth as Barienbrock scored on Pett's grounder and Kramer came home when Leslie doubled. Pett scored on a wild pitch in the eighth to even the score at 5-5.
The Fighting Scots took the lead in the ninth when Kramer reached on an error that allowed Rizzo and Widrmann to score.
Bond led off the DePauw ninth by reaching second on an error and moved to third on a balk. Straub singled Bond home with two outs before
Nolan Whitehead reached on an error. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, but a strikeout ended the game.
Knoll, Straub and O'Connell each had two of DePauw's 10 hits, while Kramer had two of Wooster's six hits.
Finn O'Meara dropped to 0-2, while Michael Scarpelli improved to 5-1.
The Tigers travel to Rose-Hulman for a 6:30 p.m. game on Wednesday, April 9.
