Greencastle, Ind. - In a back-and-forth battle at Walker Field, DePauw wrapped up the home portion of its schedule with a 6-5 win over Rose-Hulman. The Tigers improved to 10-23, while the Fightin' Engineers dropped to 17-15.
Rose-Hulman took the lead in the first as Tyler Otroszko was hit by a pitch before Connor O'Connell and Mason Rasmussen walked. Otroszko scored on a passed ball.
The Tigers countered in the bottom of the frame as
Max Bond singled and stole second before
Grady Johnson and
Carter Knoll walked and
Cuinn Morrow delivered a two-run single to left.
The Fightin' Engineers evened the count in the second as Mark Serdinak walked and scored on Rogers' double.
Rose-Hulman regained the lead in the fourth when Jonathan Oliger and Rogers walked and moved up a base on a wild pitch. After O'Connell walked, Rasmussen was hit by a pitch which brought home Oliger.
Aidan Howard led off the DePauw fourth by being hit by a pitch and moved to second on
Cooper Davis' single.
Micaiah Furbert's bunt forced Howard at third, but
Jack Murray reached on a bunt single and
Tyler Walkey drove in Davis with a sacrifice fly to make it 3-3.
Colton Brown led off the Rose-Hulman fifth with a walk and stole second before moving to third on Serdinak's single. Oliger drove Brown in with a sacrifice fly to give the Fightin' Engineers a 4-3 lead.
Johnson's leadoff homer in the fifth evened the score at 4-4 before Morrow drew a walk, moved to second on Howard's grounder and scored on Davis' single. The Tigers tacked on a run in the seventh as Davis singled with one out and moved to second a wild pitch before coming home on Murray's two-out single.
Rose-Hulman trimmed the deficit to 6-5 in the eighth as Rogers led off with a single and moved to third on Otroszko's single. Otroszko stole second and O'Connell drove in Rogers with a ground out.
Brown singled to lead off the Fightin' Engineers' ninth and moved to second on Jackson Summers' grounder. Serdinak singled Brown to third. Oliger then laid down a bunt that a charging
Carter Knoll fielded and flipped with his glove hand to Davis who tagged Brown out at the plate. Rogers then hit a ball to short that Bond stopped from getting through the infield and then, while on his knees, tossed to Walkey at second to force out Oliger and end the game.
Davis and Murray each had three of DePauw's 11 hits, while Bond and Johnson had two each. Rogers and Serdinak each had two of Rose-Hulman's seven hits.
Josh Heitert improved to 2-3, while
Tanner Hudspeth collected his first save. Caleb Misteller dropped to 1-1.
DePauw travels to Illinois Wesleyan for a Saturday doubleheader that starts at Noon CDT.
