Tigers Drop Pair to Manchester

Indianapolis, Ind. - DePauw was one strike away from winning the opener against Manchester, but the Spartans rallied for a 9-7 victory before earning the sweep with a 12-6 win in the nightcap. DePauw dropped to 4-5, while Manchester improved to 5-5.

In the opener, Manchester wasted no time in taking the lead as Gavin Gleason hit the first pitch over the left field fence. Max Horner and Joel Kennedy followed with singles before Cam Bortone singled to left scoring Horner. The Tigers got out of the inning with a double play and pop out.

DePauw responded in the bottom of the second as Bryson Dorsey and Jack Murray each singled with two outs and Max Bond reached on an error. Tyler Walkey delivered a two-run single before Grady Johnson reached on an infield single and Carter Knoll followed with a two-run single to right.

Manchester evened the score in the fourth as Gleason doubled with two outs and Horner followed with a grounder that took a high bounce and got through the right side scoring Gleason. Kennedy then drove a double to left center scoring Kennedy.

DePauw regained the lead in the fourth as Carter Knoll singled and moved to second on Drew Straub's grounder before scoring on Nate Hulen's single.

Knoll's two-out solo homer in the sixth extended DePauw's lead to 6-4, but Manchester tied the contest in the seventh. Horner led off the inning with a double and advanced to third when his collision with Johnson on Kennedy's grounder jarred the ball loose. Alex Westfield's grounder to the right side brought home Horner before Kennedy scored on Rocco Hanes' double.

Dorsey hit a two-out double in the seventh and scored the go-ahead run on Murray's single through the right side.

Horner led off the Manchester ninth with a single before the Tigers retired the next two batters. Westfield moved Horner to third with a single on a 1-2 pitch and Hanes followed with a three-run homer to left.

The Tigers had a pair of base runners in the ninth, but Manchester's Quinton Black recorded three strikeouts to preserve the win.

Knoll and Dorsey each had four of DePauw's 15 hits, while Johnson and Murray had two apiece.

Horner had four of Manchester's 16 hits with Kennedy adding three. Gleason, Westfield, Hanes and Michael Dierckman each had two.

Jamison Lewis dropped to 0-3 after relieving starter Nate Tencza. Arturo Casas improved to 1-2 with the win in relief of Ty Layson and Black notched his first save.

In the nightcap, Manchester again jumped out to a quick start with a three-run first. Gleason led off with a double and Horner singled him to third. Kennedy then drove in both with a double down the left field line. Bortone followed with an infield single and Westfield advanced both with a bunt before Hanes drove in Kennedy with a single.

DePauw countered in the bottom of the frame as Bond, Walkey and Johnson each singled and Knoll drove Bond in with a grounder.

Bortone led off the Manchester fifth by being hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch and to third on Westfield's single. Hanes drove Bortone in with a sacrifice fly. Vian Mariani followed with an RBi single and Gleason drew a bases loaded walk to make it 6-1.

Murray blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, but Manchester scored three in the sixth to extend the lead to 9-4. Johnson reached on a fielder's choice in the seventh that allowed Murray to score.

The Spartans plated three in the eighth and Bond gave DePauw its last run of the game in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI single.

Bond had three of DePauw's seven hits, while Murray added a pair. Hanes and Clay Pickett each had four of Manchester's 21 hits, while Gleason and Kennedy collected three apiece. Horner, Bortone and Mariani each had two hits.

Charlie Hawk dropped to 0-1, while Jared Holley improved to 1-1 and Jackson Todor earned his first save.

DePauw hosts Berea on Saturday, March 15, in a Noon doubleheader.
