Greencatle, Ind. - DePauw scored two runs in the seventh inning and four in the eighth of the nightcap of its doubleheader with Berea for a 13-10 win to earn a split after the Mountaineers won the opener, 14-12. The Tigers are now 5-6, while Berea is 4-9.
In the second game, Berea jumped out to a 6-0 lead with two in the first and four in the second before DePauw battled back with two in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth to take a 7-6 lead.
The Mountaineers regained the lead with two runs in the sixth and another pair in the seventh to extend the lead to 10-7.
Nolan Whitehead's two-run homer in the seventh closed the gap to 10-9.
Aidan Howard doubled to right with one out in the eighth and
Grady Johnson reached on a two-out error with Howard moving to third.
Johnson advanced to second on defensive indifference before
Carter Knoll reached on an error that allowed both Howard and Johnson to score and give the Tigers an 11-10 lead.
Louis Florida then blasted a homer to straightaway center to push the lead to 13-10.
Jamison Lewis retired the side in order in the ninth for the second straight frame to wrap up the win.
Whitehead had three of DePauw's 12 hits, while Howard,
Max Bond and Knoll each had two. Marco Manrique and Peter Torbicki each had two of Berea's 10 hits.
Lewis improved to 1-3, while Torbicki dropped to 0-1.
In the opener, Berea scored a pair in the first and DePauw responded with a single run before the Mountaineers added five in the second.
DePauw took the lead with a seven-run third as Knoll hit a two-run homer before
Jack Murray singled in a pair and Bond ripped a three-run shot to left to make it 8-7.
After Berea evened the score at 8-8 in the fourth, the Tigers regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth as
Bryson Dorsey delivered a two-run double.
The guests added a single run in the fifth and evened the count with two in the 10th before Jay Nunez pushed the lead to 13-10 with a three-run homer to left. A single tally in the seventh lifted the Mountaineers' lead to 14-10 before DePauw added two in the eighth.
Tyler Walkey led DePauw with three of its 13 hits with Bond, Johnson, Dorsey and Murray each contributing two.
Fredison Rivera and Justin Brown each had three of Berea's 14 hits with Torbicki and Nunez collecting a pair of hits.
Talan Loza dropped to 0-1, while Grabiel Martinez improved to 1-0.
DePauw returns to action on Monday, March 17, with a Noon doubleheader against Plattsburgh State in Winter Haven, Fla.
