Five-Run First Drives DePauw to 12-7 Win over Manchester

Indianapolis, Ind. - DePauw grabbed a 5-0 lead in the top of the first and added multiple runs in three other innings on the way to a 12-7 win over Manchester at Bishop Chatard High School. The Tigers improved to 4-3, while the Spartans dropped to 3-5.

The first five DePauw batters drew walks to start the game and give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Charlie Hawk's two-run double made it 5-0.

Manchester scored a pair in the second on an RBI grounder by Alex Westfield and a run-scoring single from Vian Mariani. Joel Kennedy's solo homer in the third made it 5-3 before Michael Dierckman closed the gap to 5-4 in the fourth with a double that scored Mariani.

Bryson Dorsey was hit by a pitch in the DePauw fifth and moved to second on Max Bond's single before Grady Johnson delivered a three-run homer to push the DePauw lead to 8-4. Johnson and Louis Florida each had RBI singles in the seventh to extend the lead to 10-4.

Manchester loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth and all three scored as Cam Bartone singled, Westfield drew a walk and Mariani drove in another with a single to make it 10-6.

The Tigers added two in the ninth as Johnson singled and Knoll ripped a two-run homer.

Johnson had four of DePauw's 16 hits with Knoll adding three. Aidan Howard and Hawk each had two. Bortone and Mariani each had three of Manchester's 11 hits with Donavan Massing and Dierckman each totaling two.

Pearse Riendeau improved to 2-1 as he pitched six innings with four strikeouts and no walks, while allowing four runs. Rocco Hanes dropped to 0-1.

The two teams square off in a Noon doubleheader tomorrow at Chatard High School.
