Tigers Sweep Twinbill from Knights

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw moved to 8-6 on the season following a doubleheader sweep of visiting Calvin by scores of 9-1 and 4-3. Calvin dropped to 11-7 with the losses.

The Tigers wasted little time in getting on the board as Alex Romero-Salas hit a two-out, solo homer to left center in the bottom of the first. DePauw tacked on two more in the second as Kendall Hynes doubled home Paige Brady and Libby Minobe brought home Madi Lockridge with a single.

Ella Kuenster doubled with one out in the third and Brady drove her home with a two-out double. Brady then scored on Riley Heim's single to make it 5-0.

Calvin reached the board in the fifth as Tory Decker's single scored Sage Mougin.

The Tigers ended the game in the bottom of the fifth due to the run-rule as Romero-Salas led off with a single and pinch-runner Kelsey Schneider advanced to third on a throwing error after Kuenster reached on a bunt single. Brady's one-out single brought home Schneider and Brady stole second before Riley Heim walked to load the basses. A wild pitch allowed Kunester to score and give the Tigers a 7-1 advantage. Lockridge and Kendall Hymes followed with run-scoring singles to end the contest.

Hynes had three of DePauw's 14 hits with Romero-Salas, Kuenster, Brady and Lockridge following with two each. Three different Knights had one hit apiece.

Riley Depa improved to 5-3 after allowing just three hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Brooke Hunderman dropped to 5-4.

In the nightcap, it was Calvin that got off to a quick start as Valeria Frias and Aubrey singled and moved up on Emily Sweetland's sacrifice bunt. Carly Dole followed with a two-run single.

Schneider reached on an error to start the DePauw first, stole second and moved to third on Minobe's grounder. Romero-Salas plated Schneider with a single.

DePauw evened the score in the third as Schneider singled, stole second and moved to third on Minobe's bunt single. Minobe stole second before Romero-Salas lined out to center and an error on the play allowed Schneider to score.

The Tigers gained their first lead of the game as Schneider led off the fifth with a bunt single and stole second. Romero-Salas delivered a double down the left field line to make it 3-2.

Calvin answered in the sixth with Sweetland leading off with a double and moving to third on Dole's single. Sweetland was thrown out at third after Dole attempted to steal second. Taylor Sanborn doubled home Dole to even the score at 3-3.

Callie Rheinheimer hit a two-out, hard liner off the pitcher for a single in the sixth and moved to second on a throwing error on the play. Rheinheimer moved to third when Hynes reached on an error and then came home on a passed ball.

Schneider and Romero-Salas each had two of DePauw's seven hits, while Dole and Sanborn each had two of Calvin's eight hits.

Romero-Salas improved to 2-0 after striking out six and walking just one, while Emma Ludema dropped to 6-3.

Sunday's doubleheader with Trine has been postponed to April 3 based on the weather forecast. The Tigers return to action March 29-30 at Illinois Wesleyan's Softball Tournament.
