Winter Haven, Fla. - DePauw opened play in the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational with a doubleheader split with Plattsburgh State as the Tigers won the opener, 9-0, and fell in the nightcap, 3-1. DePauw moved to 6-7 on the season, while the Cardinals are now 4-3.
In the opener,
Carter Knoll's first-inning, ground-rule double scored
Aidan Howard before the Tigers struck for five in the second.
Jack Murray and Howard scored on wild pitches before
Drew Straub drove in
Grady Johnson with a single and
Bryson Dorsey plated Knoll and
Louis Florida with a base hit to make it 6-0.
Johnson's sacrifice fly in the seventh brought home
Tyler Walkey before Knoll drove in Murray with a single and Florida did the same with
Max Bond scoring.
Knoll had two of DePauw's seven hits, while five different Plattsburgh players had one hit apiece.
Lucas Stephan collected the win after allowing just two hits in 4.0 innings of relief work. Jack Castillo dropped to 0-1 with the loss.
Plattsburgh took a 2-0 lead in the third inning of the nightcap as Alex Kornblau drove in Jackson Pam with a single before Kyle Cremin brought home Kornblau with a sacrifice fly. Kornblau's single in the fifth scored Bostyn Duquette and made it 3-0.
DePauw's lone run came in the fifth when Murray led off with a double and scored on Bond's one-out single. The Tigers left two on in that inning and left the bases loaded in the sixth as they stranded 11 runners in the contest.
Johnson and
Nolan Whitehead each had two of DePauw's nine hits, while Kornblau had two of Plattsburgh's five.
Pearse Riendeau dropped to 2-2 with the loss, while Tyler Kohn improved to 1-0 and Nick Goldberg earned his second save.
DePauw faces Milwaukee School of Engineering at 9:15 a.m. tomorrow.
