Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw entered the fourth period trailing by four goals and closed the deficit to one with just over one minute left, but Transylvania was able to run out the clock after a Tigers' turnover following the ensuing faceoff for a 9-8 victory over the Tigers. DePauw dropped to 1-2, while the Pioneers improved to 3-2.
Transylvania scored twice in the opening five minutes before DePauw's
Alex Sharma put the Tigers on the board with 9:15 left in the period. The Pioneers added a third goal at the 4:27 mark to extend their lead to 3-1.
Henry White's goal with 9:07 remaining in the half brought DePauw to within one again, but the Pioneers scored midway through the period to make it 4-2. Sharma's second goal with 2:00 left closed the gap to 4-3.
The Pioneers blanked the Tigers in the third, 3-0, to expand their lead to 7-3.
Noah Sulpizio and
Gavin Berry quickly shifted the momentum with goals in the first 2:26 of the final period.
Luke Larish's goal just 31 seconds later pushed the margin back to three before
Max Vanderwiel scored with 10:18 left to cut the lead to 8-6.
Transylvania's Kade Kruger delivered a key goal with 6:52 left to make it 9-6. DePauw was back to within one after
Jack Neff scored with 5:21 left and Sulpizio added another with 1:23 left. DePauw won the faceoff, but turned the ball over and Transylvania was able to run out the clock.
Sharma and Sulpizio each scored twice and
Henry White assisted on two.
Matthew Roman won 12-of-19 faceoffs and recorded five ground balls which shared the team lead with
Jack Neff.
Luke Stetter and Jack Miller each scored twice for Transylvania with Miller and Josh Harney each totaling two assists. Briggs Beck led the Pioneers with four ground balls.
Anthony Reinhardt totaled eight saves for DePauw, while Nick DeGrandi had nine for the Pioneers.
DePauw outshot Transylvania, 42-32, and committed 17 turnovers to the Pioneers' 20. DePauw held a 28-23 edge in ground balls.
