Delaware, Ohio - Henry Hinkle's buzzer-beating jumper gave Ohio Wesleyan a 73-71 North Coast Athletic Conference win over DePauw. The Tigers dropped to 12-12 overall and 6-7 in the NCAC, while the Battling Bishops improved to 14-10 overall and 9-6 in conference play.
The Tigers held a 65-61 lead after
Reph Stevenson hit two free throws with 2:26 left. Ohio Wesleyan's Isaac Ward countered a pair of charity tosses at the 2:12 mark to cut the DePauw lead to 65-63.
Jake Lowman's steal led to Hinkle's three-point play which gave the hosts a 66-65 lead with 1:45 left.
DePauw regained the lead as
Brady Kunka sank two free throws before Hinkle knocked in two more to give Ohio Wesleyan a 68-67 advantage with 1:10 left.
Sam Jacobs' two free throws with 47 seconds remaining gave DePauw a 69-68 lead, but it was short-lived as Hinkle buried a three with 34 seconds left to make it 71-69.Â
The Tigers'
Billy Bach hit a jumper with 16 seconds remaining to even the score at 71-71 before Hinkle hit a turnaround jumper from the free throw line as the buzzer sounded.
Ohio Wesleyan took a 13-7 lead in the opening seven minutes, but the Tigers responded with eight straight capped by
Caleb Washington's three-point play which gave DePauw a 15-13 lead with 11:08 left in the half.
The Battling Bishops regained the lead before DePauw's
Billy Bach and
Andre Ozlowski each hit threes to give the Tigers a 23-19 advantage. DePauw closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 41-32 halftime lead.
A 7-0 DePauw run early in the second half gave the Tigers their largest lead of the game at 49-37 with 14:32 left. DePauw still maintained a double-digit lead midway through the second half, but an 8-1 Ohio Wesleyan stretch closed the gap to three with just over six minutes left.
Stevenson led DePauw with 17 points with
Joe Smith adding 12 and Jacobs 11. Kunka grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out five assists which equaled a career high.
Hinkle paced Ohio Wesleyan with 24 points, while Ward added 13 and Lowman scored 10. Tony Carter grabbed eight rebounds with Phil Wallace and David Rice finishing with two assists each.
DePauw shot 46.3 percent from the field to Ohio Wesleyan's 45.5 percent and the Tigers held a 36-27 edge on the boards. The Tigers committed 13 turnovers and the Battling Bishops totaled just eight.
DePauw hosts Wooster on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 1 p.m.
