Greencastle, Ind. - Visiting Denison nailed 15-of-31 3-pointers and committed just three turnovers on the way to a 77-62 North Coast Athletic Conference win over DePauw. The 20th-ranked Big Red improved to 20-2 overall and 12-1 in the conference, while the Tigers dropped to 12-11 overall and 8-6 in the conference.
The teams were tied, 17-17, midway through the first half but Denison put together a 10-2 run later in the half to take a 38-25 lead. DePauw's
Caleb Washington countered with a three before
Kyle Lillwitz knocked in three free throws and
Reph Stevenson hit a pair of charity tosses to trim the deficit to 38-33. Scotty Dean's trey in the final minute of the half extended Denison's lead to 41-33 at the break.
The Tigers were within seven at 44-37 after
Brady Kunka's layup with 14:47 left, but the Big Red scored the next five to push the lead back to double digits. DePauw responded with five straight before Denison scored the next eight to push the lead to 57-42 with 9:23 remaining. The Tigers were no closer than 11 the rest of the way, while the Big Red led by as many as 19.
Washington led DePauw with 20 points and career-high tying 12 rebounds, while
Joe Smith added 10 points and Kunka dished out two assists.
Tyler Miller paced Denison with 19 points and seven rebounds with Aidan Long totaling 13 points and Darren Rubin adding 10. Cameron Smith and Gates Flynn each dished out four assists.
DePauw shot 33.3 percent from the field to Denison's 45.9 percent and the Big Red made 15 3-pointers with the Tigers totaling seven. DePauw held a 42-31 rebounding edge and the Big Red led, 19-4, in points off of turnovers.
DePauw returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 19, with an 8 p.m. game at Ohio Wesleyan.
