Strong Fourth Quarter Lifts Trine to Comeback Win over DePauw

Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw built as much as a 14-point lead over Trine in the opening game of the Amy Hasbrook Tournament, but the Thunder outscored the Tigers, 26-8, in the fourth quarter to take a 60-51 win. DePauw dropped to 6-5, while Trine improved to 7-3. The Tigers face Ohio Northern tomorrow at 4 p.m. in the classic format, while Trine takes on Elmhurst at 2 p.m.

Trine led by as many as eight at 13-5 in the first period, but DePauw closed the gap to 16-13 at the quarter break. The Tigers opened the second quarter with six straight to grab a 19-16 advantage on the way to a 29-22 halftime lead.

The Thunder scored the first bucket of the third, but DePauw responded with nine straight on baskets from Tori Allen, Olivia Hart and Riley Mont before Mont buried a three to make it 38-24 with 6:34 remaining in the third. Madison Wagner beat the third-quarter buzzer to cut the DePauw lead to 43-34.

Trine carried that momentum into the fourth as Ally Capouch knocked down a three and Callie Nichols scored on a layup to cut the DePauw lead to 43-39 with 8:02 remaining. Campbell Schrank stopped the run with a free throw but Olivia Marks and Annika Southworth countered with treys to give the Thunder a 45-44 lead with 6:14 left.

Hailey Cole made one free throw and Gracey Metz hit a pair of charity tosses to extend the lead to 48-44 at the 4:44 mark. Schranks's second-chance bucket with 4:10 left snapped a stretch of nearly 11 minutes without a field goal for the Tigers, but Southworth came right back with a three to push the Thunder lead to 51-46 and start a 10-2 run that sealed the win.

Schrank led DePauw with a career-high 19 points with Mont adding 10. Bren Hill and Allen each hauled down seven rebounds and Allen dished out three assists.

Erin Sherwood paced Trine with 11 points, while Southworth added 10. Wagner led the Thunder with five rebounds with Southworth and Capouch recording three assists each.

DePauw shot just 28.0 percent from the field to Trine's 43.5 percent. The Tigers connected on just 16.7 percent in the fourth quarter to the Thunder's 61.5 percent. DePauw held a 35-27 rebounding lead and committed 13 turnovers to Trine's 15.
