Tigers Drop Season Opener to Dubuque

Dubuque, Iowa - Dubuque outscored DePauw 9-0 over the final 1:51 and topped the Tigers, 86-85, in the season opener for both teams at the Loras Tip-Off Tournament.

The teams battled through a first half that included two ties and six lead changes with DePauw taking a 40-34 halftime lead.

The Tigers still led 42-38 early in the second half before the Spartans rattled off seven straight to take a 45-42 lead. Dubuque stretched it to five a 50-45 but DePauw knotted the contest at 56-56 on Eli Elllis' 3-pointer with 11:24 left.

DePauw put together a 13-1 stretch with Caleb Washington starting it with a three and finishing with a pair of buckets to give DePauw a 75-66 lead with 5:30 left.

Washington's layup with 1:51 remaining gave DePauw an 85-77 advantage, but those were the Tigers' last points of the contest.

Grady Thompson countered with a trey and Jacob Williams added two free throws with 29 seconds left to close the gap to 85-82.

The Tigers missed the front end of a one-and-one and Jalen Scott scored on a layup with eight seconds left to cut the DePauw lead to 85-84.

Williams' steal and layup with five seconds remaining gave the Spartans the lead and two DePauw shots in the paint were off the mark as time expired.

Washington led DePauw with 20 points, while Sam Jacobs followed with 16 and Reph Stevenson recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds. Joe Smith led with six assists.

Williams paced Dubuque with 25 points with Scott adding 19 and four assists and six steals. Grady Thompson and Ethan Henderson scored 12 apiece and Thompson hauled down nine rebounds. 

DePauw shot 52.5 percent from the floor to Dubuque's 52.4 percent, but the Spartans knocked in three more 3-pointers while connecting on 39.1 percent. The Tigers held a 33-29 rebounding lead and committed 14 turnovers to Dubuque's 12.

The Tigers face host Loras tomorrow at 1 p.m. CST.
