Greencastle, Ind. - Five Tigers scored in double figures on the way to an 86-78 win over Anderson in DePauw's home opener. The Tigers improved to 2-1, while the Ravens slipped to 0-3.
DePauw built a 19-10 first-half lead on the strength of a 9-0 run, but Anderson scored the next five to start a 15-5 run that put the Ravens ahead, 25-24, with 6:04 left in the half. DePauw scored the next six and stayed in front the rest of the half on the way to a 36-33 advantage at the intermission.
The Tigers again built a nine-point lead at 45-36, but Anderson scored seven straight at the end of a 17-4 run and grabbed a 53-49 lead with 13:17 remaining. Anderson still held a 60-56 lead before
Brady Kunka and
Sam Jacobs hit back-to-back threes and Jacobs added a put back to cap an 8-0 stretch which gave the Tigers a 64-60 advantage.
The game was tied five times over a four-minute stretch before Jacobs hit two free throws with 3:45 left and
Caleb Washington knocked in a jumper with 3:16 remaining to push the Tigers' lead to 80-76.
Anderson's Elijah Mattingly missed a deep three and Washington countered with a layup to make it 82-77 with 2:18 left. The teams were scoreless until Anderson's Bryce Williams hit one free throw with 54 seconds left.
Eli Ellis made two free throws with 40 seconds remaining and, following an Anderson miss,
Reph Stevenson sealed the win with a layup off of Jacobs' assist.
Washington led DePauw with 19 points with Jacobs adding 16 and Stevenson 15. Kunka followed with 14 and
Vince Nixon scored a career-high 13. Kunka grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and, along with Ellis and Jacobs, dished out three assists.
Mattingly paced Anderson with 20 points followed by Williams with 17 and Will Jamison and Kenney Troutman with 11 apiece. Nolan Swan grabbed five rebounds and Jamison handed out four assists.
The Tigers shot 53.1 percent from the floor to Anderson's 42.9 percent and DePauw held a 44-27 edge on the boards. DePauw converted 13 offensive rebounds into a 19-2 margin in second-chance points and outscored the Ravens in the paint, 54-30. The Tigers held Anderson without a field goal over the final 7:30.
DePauw travels to Greenville on Nov, 19 for a 6 p.m. CST game.
