Greencastle, Ind. - In a match that featured 40 ties and 13 lead changes, DePauw came back from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth set but visiting Ohio Wesleyan took a 3-2 (30-28, 27-25, 17-25, 17-25, 15-11) win over the Tigers. DePauw dropped to 12-11 overall and 3-3 in the North Coast Athletic Conference, while the Battling Bishops improved to 11-13 overall and 4-2 in the NCAC,.
The first set included 19 ties and seven lead changes. The Tigers fought off one set point and then were poised to win the set with four set points of their own, but the battling Bishops finished with a 3-0 run to take a 1-0 match lead. Ohio Wesleyan got out to an 8-3 lead in the second before DePauw battled back with an 8-1 stretch. The Tigers held a 21-17 advantage, but Ohio Wesleyan closed with a 10-4 run.
Ohio Wesleyan scored the first point of the third set, but that was the only lead it had in the set as the Tigers hit .462 to cut the Battling Bishops' lead to 2-1. The Tigers fell behind, 9-4, in the fourth but scored six of the next seven to even the score at 10-10. DePauw finished the set on a 5-0 run to force the deciding fifth set.
The teams were tied, 9-9, in the fifth before Ohio Wesleyan scored the next three and six of the final eight for the victory.
Jen Proeh paced DePauw with 14 kills and a .500 attack percentage, while
Madeline Ozersky followed with 14 kills.
Julia McWaters totaled 29 assists with
Addison Hooker and
Lauren Bohn each totaling three aces.
Grace Myers led the way with 15 digs, while
Kerry O'Connor had four block assists.
Natalie Dieball and Mason Campbell had 13 kills apiece with Lily Bechina totaling 48 assists. Dieball led Ohio Wesleyan with three aces, while Avery Krause finished with 18 digs and Abby Nulp totaled six block assists.
DePauw outhit Ohio Wesleyan, .201-.194 and held a 64-58 edge in kills. The Tigers also led in kills, 11-7, and each team totaled 9.0 blocks.
DePauw finishes NCAC regular season play on Saturday, Nov. 1, with a 1 p.m. match at Wittenberg.
