Ellie Mahan Shuts Down Kenyon 1-0

Greencastle, Ind. - The DePauw Tigers edged the Kenyon Owls 1-0 for their first NCAC victory of the season on Breast Cancer Awareness Day at Reavis Stadium. DePauw moves to 7-5-1 (1-2-0) and Kenyon falls to 7-2-3 (1-1-0).

DePauw battled all game and found themselves ahead off a 20th minute goal scored by senior captain Ellie Mahan on an assist from fellow senior captain Macy Happe. The Tigers' defense held strong, anchored by goalkeeper tandem Aubree Empie and Riley Cholewa. Empiee was cleared for play early today and entered the game in the first half, leading the duo with 63:27 minutes played and four saves on the afternoon.

Kenyon outshot DePauw 17-2, but the Tigers' defense held strong and forced several missed chances from the Owls. Despite the shot advantage, the Owls were only able to put four of the 17 shots on frame while the Tigers made both their opportunities count with both of their shots being on target. Kenyon held advantages over DePauw in corner kicks and fouls. The Owls had eight corner kicks to DePauw's two and 11 fouls to the Tigers' 14.

Several yellow cards were handed out in the second half of the match with 3 being shown to Kenyon. Sophia Patrey and Ashleigh Rupprecht were shown cards for DePauw. Mahan and Happe each recorded a shot for the Tigers to lead the offense in this defensively oriented match. Happe was the only Tiger to go the full 90 minutes on the day. Kenyon's offense was led by Addison Szollosi with four shots and Emily Copeland with five. No player for either team recorded more than one shot on goal.

Mahan's 20th minute tally gave the Dublin, Ohio product her 2nd goal on the season and 4th point on the year. Happe's assist was her 1st of the season and 5th point. Happe is now second on the team in points and Mahan is third. The match was DePauw's fifth shutout of the season

The Tigers have one more match during fall break traveling to Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday, October 18th at 4 p.m..

I chose DePauw for a number of different reasons. First, the University takes academics very seriously and wants their students to excel. I am looking to study in the field of chemistry and believe that DePauw's math and science programs are recognized for their high quality education. I also love the liberal arts style for a school, where I can explore other opportunities and expand my areas of interest. I was recruited by several Division I soccer programs, but decided to play at DePauw, because I really liked the coach and the team, and DePauw will provide me the opportunity to play soccer but also will allow me to enjoy the full college experience.
