Greencastle, Ind. - DePauw held Oberlin scoreless for the final 2:50 and extended its win streak to four with a 76-73 North Coast Athletic Conference victory over visiting Oberlin. The Tigers moved to 8-7 overall and 4-2 in the NCAC, while the Yeomen dropped to 9-5 overall and 1-4 in league play.
Oberlin led by as many as 10 late in the opening half, but DePauw baskets by
Caleb Washington and
Billy Bach trimmed the deficit to 44-38 at the intermission.
Sam Jacobs hit a couple of buckets in the opening three minutes of the second half to close the gap to 44-42. The Yeomen maintained the lead until Jacobs nailed a pull-up jumper and
Reph Stevenson buried a 3-pointer to even the count at 60-60 with 8:27 remaining. The teams exchanged baskets before Smith hit a free throw and a three to make it 66-62. Stevenson pushed the lead to eight after back-to-back dunks set up by DePauw steals.
Oberlin rattled off eight straight points to knot the score at 70-70. with 4:30 remaining. Stevenson stopped the run with a three-point play, but Adam Navarre countered with a 3-pointer with 2:56 left. Those were the final Oberlin points of the contest as Jacobs scored with 1:44 left and Smith hit a free throw with 30 seconds remaining. The Yeomen missed two game-tying attempts in the final eight seconds before Washington grabbed the rebound to seal the win.
Jacobs scored a season-high 27, while Stevenson added 21 and Washington 11. Washington grabbed a team-high seven rebounds and dished out four assists.
Navarre led Oberlin with 18 points with Yuuki Okubo chipping in 16 and JJ Gray 14. Milun Micanovic grabbed eight rebounds and Okubo handed out eight assists.
DePauw shot 50 percent from the floor to Oberlin's 40.6 percent with the Yeomen holding a 37-34 rebounding edge.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, Jan. 15, when they travel to Denison for a 6 p.m. contest.
