Greencastle, Ind.- Bouncing back from its tough 4-0 loss to No. 1 WashU, the DePauw women's soccer team defeated Rhodes College 1-0 in its third shutout of the season. The Tigers improved to 3-3-1 for the season, while Rhodes dropped to 3-2.
Â
Rhodes and DePauw played a physically demanding game in an evenly matched contest. In the first ten minutes, the two teams seemed to keep most of the play in the midfield, each vying for possession and advancement of the ball. Finally, at the 17-minute mark, DePauw was awarded a free kick from 20 yards out. Stepping up to take the free kick, sophomore
Peyton Howard struck the ball with her right foot; it soared over the heads of everyone in the box and found its way into the top right corner of Rhodes' net for what would ultimately be the game-winning goal.Â
Â
DePauw's determination to win the 50-50 balls in the air and thoughtful passing kept Rhodes on the defensive. Though the shot margins were close, the Tigers held the Lynx to just three shots and four corners.
Aubree Empie and
Taylor Beard shared time in goal for DePauw, with each recording crucial saves to maintain the Tigers' one-goal lead. For the Lynx, Olivia Barfield also tallied one save for the afternoon.

The Tigers' next game is Wednesday, September 18, at Franklin College. The game is set to start at 7 p.m.
