Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Tigers Beat Maroons in Penalty Shootouts

Sewanee, Tenn.- Securing its second win in two days, the DePauw field hockey team beat Roanoke College 2-1 after outscoring the Maroons 3-2 in penalty strokes. The Tigers move to 2-3 for the season, while the Maroons drop to 2-2.

Four minutes into the first period, Roanoke's Grace Vernarelli put the Maroons up 1-0. Despite being down one early and held to just one shot, the Tigers managed to capitalize on that one shot when Hailey Nowak pushed a pass to Alexandra May, who deflected the ball into the Maroons' cage. Knotted at one apiece, the two teams traded shots and penalty corner attempts.

After a grueling four quarters, DePauw and Roanoke remained tied at the end of the fourth. Thanks to a stifling defense, the Tigers kept the Maroons at bay, facing nine shots between the two overtimes while putting up zero of their own.

Following the two overtimes, the final chance to earn its second win of the season came down to penalty strokes. Both teams missed their first two penalty stroke attempts; however, on the third attempt by Roanoke, Vernarelli found the back of DePauw's cage to put the Maroons up by one. Hailey Nowak hat quickly erased their one-stroke lead after burying her attempt in the back of the cage to tie it at one. Roanoke would miss its next attempt while the Tigers' Lilly Harris put DePauw up 2-1. Again, the Maroons answered with their own goal; however, in DePauw's final attempt, Nowak secured the 3-2 victory for the Tigers.

DePauw's Bella Lauber finished the afternoon with nine saves, while Roanoke's goalkeeper Madison Wingerter recorded four.

The Tigers travel to Richmond, Ind., on Tuesday, September 17, to take on Earlham College at 7 p.m.
